WIHTON RACES i CONCLUDING DAY 1 .WINNERS hard to pick. ' [By St. Clair.] 1 INVERCARGILL, November 18. 1 The Winton Meeting was concluded in warm, windy weather, and on a course rapidly improving. The attendaiice was good, £325 17s 6d being taken at the gates, as compared with £307 on the second day last year. The totalisator turnover was £12,743, making £27,311 for the meeting—a decrease of £1,953i on last year’s figures. The racj ing was good and the fields large, in which the public found the winners hard to find, and backers of favorites ' had yet another bad day. After the Stewards’ Purse Handicap F. J. M‘Kay I lodged a complaint against the starter, Mr A. D. MTvor, for despatching the field while his assistant had hold of Ecuador’s bridle. After taking evidence the committee was satisfied that there were no grounds for M'Kay’s complaint. Mr MTvor’s starting was good throughout the meeting. HACK HANDICAP; All started in the County Hack I 1 Handicap, 7f, and Bilbo, with F, E. I | Jones in the saddle, was sent out a good I favorite. Divinial was second choice I ! with Paris, French Belle, and Rippling I Lake next in demand. From a beautii ful line-up Glenham took charge and w led Bilbo, French Belle, and Divinial S into the back stretch. At the far turn | Glenham was ahead of Bilbo, with iH French Bello and Paris next. Glenham led into the straight from Paris, X 3 who got up on the inside of Bilbo. At the distance post Strathnever put in' a great run on the outside, and with . Paris challenged Glenham, but the | latter stayed on to beat Strathnever i by a short half-length, with Paris a ! length further back third, followed by Rippling Lake, Bilbo, and French Belle. I i All tho acceptors went to the post ! for the'Oreti Harness Trot, Ifm, class | 3.43, and tho Gore-trained Nelson \ M’Alwyn (Nelson Bingen—Miss Spears, driven by J. Walsh) was made a good favorite, with Jock’s Pal, Day Pointer, Revolt, and Golden Dawn the next best fancied. Joy Chimes, Per© Pointer, and Revolt lost their chances at the start. Nelson M'Alwyn led Baker Boy, Lady Zita, and Vasiliki over the first half-mile. Then Baker Boy led into tho back stretch, and tho favorite took charge again at the five-furlong post, where she had Vasiliki, _ Baker’s Boy, Lady Zita, and Day Pointer all ih close attendance. Turning into the straight the favorite was just in front of Vasiliki and Day Pointer, with Golden Dawn travelling very fast. In the run homo Nelson M'Alwyn' stayed on to beat Golden Dawn by a long neck, with Lady Zita (who came again) a length off third, Day Pointer, Vasiliki, and Baker Boy next. Times: 3min 46 l-ssec, Smin 41 2-ssec, 3min 46 2-osec. Totalisiator, £1,524|. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Dancing Days, whoso rider again drew No. 1 at the barrier, was sent out a good favorite in the Stewards’ Purse Handicap, 6f, with Corn Rigs, Sweet Melody, and Jack o’ Lantern (Fleotham —Eight Bells, ridden by L. J. Ellis) all well supported. Ecuador was left several lengths when the barrier rose, and Dancing Days, Sweet Melody, and Corn Rigs hopped out. | Dancing Days was just in front of j Sweet Melody, In the Pink, Master | Sandstone, and Jack o’ Lantern turning for home. Tho favorite was chal- ( longed* by Jack o’ Lantern inside the *, 'distance -post, and in a good finish the {latter won by throe parts of a length. ) Ecuador finished fast a length further back, and just cut Valdamo out of third money. MEMORIAL HANDICAP. * 4 Receipt and Queen Balboa were withdrawn _ from the Soldier Members’ Memorial Handicap, Im, and Baldowa was made a warm favorite, with Full Swing, Apache, Warhaven, and Dismantle (Tractor—Take Down, ridden by N. Kerr) the best fancied of the others. Dismantle at once went to the front, and led Full Swing, All Style, Warhaven, and Apache to the six-fur-long post. A little_ further on Full Swing ran up to Dismantle, and tho pair led Apache and Warhaven into the straight. Dismantle maintained her advantage in the run home, and beat Full Swing by a length, with Apache and Warhaven only heads away. Baldowa and Geramal were next. Time. Imin 46sec. Totalisator, £1,746. THE STEEPLES. All started in the Steeplechase Handicap, about and Greenstone was made a considerably better favorite than Londonderry (Kilbrouey— Droski), with Nyanza the best backed of the others. Nyanza, who ran in Mr P. J. Boyle’s interests, having been purchased by him prior to the race, I at once went to the front, Night running off at the first fence. Nyanza, Londonderry, and Greenstone led the field in close company, and in that order until six furlongs from home, where Londonderry and Greenstone headed Nyanza and jumped tho last two _ fences on terms. Once in the straight Londonderry drew out from Greenstone, and beat him home by four lengths, the latter trying to run off a ; hundred yards from the .post. _ Nyapza | was twenty lengths away third fol- | lowed by Kipling and Punjaub at long intervals. Obligio, Dismantle, Flying Mist, and Spean Bridge were withdrawn from the Awarua Hack Handicap, 6f; and the throe-year-old Battle Colors was favorite, with Tholomon (who had a 51b allowance) the best backed of the others. Then came Spcarmaid (Grey--1 spear—Marsinah, ridden by J. T. Andrews), Gipsy Maid, and Soldier’s Hope in order of fancy. Gipsy Maid, on the rails, began very smartly, while the favorite was left several lengths. After going two furlongs Gipsy Maid was showing the way to Battle Colors, Spearmaid, and Tholomon, and this was the order round the top and into tho straight. heads were turned for home Snearmaid made a good run, and heat Gipsy Maid by half a length. Soldier’s Hope, on the rails, was third, but the judge placed Battle Colors in front of him, and Tholomon (who ran ■a out wide at the home turn) and King Balboa were next. Time, Imin 18sec. f Totalisator, £1,664. •, DASH SADDLE TROT. } Only Our Star was withdrawn from the Dash Saddle Trot. Ifm, and Liberal (Coldstream Bells—Wallace L. mare, ridden by A. M'Lellan) was made a hot favorite, with Sea Hawk the only other starter solidly backed. Needles, Pert Pointer, and Coy Bells were the best supported of the others. Liberal began the best of the limit horses, and led Sea Hawk and Chiming King throughout, winning pulling up to a walk by a dozen lengths from Sea Hawk. Vasiliki was third six lengths away, followed by South Star and Leith Chimes. Times: Smin Bsec, 3min llsec, 3min 11 2-ssec. Totalisator, £1,747|. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Warhaven, Corn Rigs, and In the Pink were withdrawn from tho Farewell Handicap, Im, for which Receipt was made a better favorite than Tholomon' (who had a 51b allowance), with , Queen Balboa, j|ugle Note, and Bloom ; the best backed of thb others. Although Limerick only arrived home yesterday ho was wonderfully Iresii when inspected in his yard to-day. He has not developed at all during his trip’ to the Commonwealth, \>'jk ho has grown up a little. His conformation does not allow for much improvement in this direction. Both front feet show distinct -signs of the trouble that affected him during his campaign. They had been cht away a good deal, and the heels are much enlarged, but he appears to be sound. It is easy to understand the anxiety lie caused Ins trainer, and it is surprising how Limerick raced as well as he did. He is to enjoy a holiday unil ho quite recovers. P. D. Jones has signified his intention of paying another visit to Australia next spring, provided everything goes on all right in the interval. 1 SOCCER. HOME RESULTS. Lasky forfeited their engagements, and other scratchings left Sutherland the scratcli man. The weather was fine and the roads were in good order, with few bad patches. Hellier, Jennings, and Taylor were all on the same mark, and kept together practically throughout. Overhauling the limit men in the last thirty miles, Hellier drew away to win by about 6min from Jennings, with Taylor a close third. There were several punctures. ; INCIDENTS TO BE INVESTIGATED. A later message states that the official statement gives Hellier the fastest ; time—sh 42min 30 2-ssec. J. Harcourt 1 is placed fourth, and Sutherland fifth, 1 the time of the last named being given as 6h 2min 35 l-ssec. The starter (Mr G. Sutherland) said the prize money would not be awarded until the officials were satisfied that all the riding conditions had been observed by competitors. Ho said it had been alleged that some of the cyclists were towed by motor cars at certain points, and that there were other incidents which needed investigation. He was passing Whangarata in the official car when a resident informed him that some of the riders had been towed past behind a motor car.
