OCTAGON ‘The Desert Healer,’ an E. M. Hull novel, has been adapted to the screen under the title of ‘ Old Loves and New,’ and is the headliner at the Octagon Theatre. Under desert skies one of the most compelling of love themes is unfolded. In the leading roles are Barbara Bedford and Lewis Stone. The film also signals the return to the screen of Katherine Macdonald. She has the role of a faithless wife, whose duplicity drove her hus-band-crushed and broken—to a life of solitude among the denizens of the desert. Lewis Stone has a part that he plays to perfection. ‘Old Loves and New’ tells of an unfaithful wife, whose duplicity wrecked a home and drove » doting husband to desert wastes, where he sought sanctuary from his troubled mind. Out there among the Arabs be encounters Marny, a beautiful girl, and rescues her from bandits. Later he finds that she is the wife of the man who had caused the break six years earlier. It is then that the real thrills begin, and the tense moments continue right up to the surprising and smashing climax. EVERYBODY'S The new headliner at Everybody’s Theatre is entitled ‘ Miss Brewster’s Millions,’ and has Bebe Daniels, Warner Baxter, Ford Sterling, Andre de Beranger, and Miss Beresford among the featured players. The story tells of. Miss Polly Brewster, a penniless girl, who.finds, .herself heiress to a million ■ 'dollars, ah , the condition that she, invests it. pier uncle, Ned' Brewster, : is annoyed at this, and offers the girl his entire 'fortune, amounting to several millions, -if she disposes'of the first legacy within three months.. Then follow three months of hectic spending. 'Finally her lawyer tells liei- that all is spent, 1 and at, the’ Same time'’she learns that her uncle Ned’s fortune has been lost on the Btbck'r.Exchangei- Jn despair she returns to her work on the screen, but Tom Hancock tells her that all has not been lost, and they find happiness together. In addition is ‘Manhattan jladness.*'.featuring Jack Dempsey and Estelle Taylor; The

theme centres about Steve O’Dar, who says that New York has not enough thrills for him. His friends then proceed to. show him that he is_ wrong in his statement, and a lively time ensues. PLAZA AND GRAND ‘ The Slave of Fashion ’ is the new attraction at the Plaza and Girand Theatres. Nonna Shearer has the role of Katherine Emmerson, who, through a railway accident, is mistaken for Madeline Carson, who is going to New York to occupy Nicholas Wentworth’s bachelor while he is away;. Her parents arrive in the city to visit her, and she tells them that she is married to Wentworth. Mrs Emmerson, being- old-fashioned and _ conventional, is alarmed at the girl’s intimacy with a Dick Wayne, and cables to Wentworth to return home. He is amazed and curious to know who the woman is who is posing as his better half. The Emmerson family besiege him with attention, and Katherine is overwhelmed with embarrassment. She tries to explain the situation, but he will not listen; but finally her innocence and charm have their effect on him, and they are married. -The other feature picture is entitled ‘ Sky High Corral,’ with Art Acord in the leading role. QUEEN’S AND KING EDWARD The picture version of James Oliver Cunvood’s famous story of the far north is told in ‘ Baree, son of Kazan ’ at the Queen’s and King Edward Theatres. Tho stpry deals with Baree, a dog whose father was a dog, and his mother a grey wolf. The first man he saw was Jim Carvel, who was hiding in the north. Carvel makes friends with the animal, but falls oyer a bank and breaks his leg. He is discovered by Pierrot, a trapper, and his beautiful daughter, Nopeese, and taken to their cabin. Baree becomes ensnared in one of tho traps belonging to M'Taggart. the unscrupulous factor, and is" unmercifully beaten by him. „ Nepeese, however, rescues the dog and cares for him. Later, when Pierrot is away, M'Taggart comes to the cabin, and is embracing the girl when her father appears. A desperate hand-to-hand battle ensues, and Pierrot is killed. Rather than fall into the hands of the factor, the girl throws herself into a river. An old Indian, Tuboa, resc:iies_ her, - and she meets Carvel and marries him.
