ORIENTAL CARNIVAL

SUCCESSFUL OPENING Last night, an Oriental carnival was opened in the Coronation Hall, Ravensbourno. The carnival, which has been arranged on an elaborate scale, has been promoted for the purpose oi raising funds with which to purchase instruments and uniforms for the West I Harbor Brass Band, and to lay new ten- ' nis courts There was a large attendance, and the goods for sale on the stalls found ready purchasers. The carnival was opened by the Mayor of West Harbor (Mr H. E. Holier), who declared that it was the best decorated and best planned fair ever held in the district. There was a professional touch about the arrangement of the stalls and the decorations carried out by Mr H. Simpson, and tie committee was greatly indebted to him for his splendid work. It was to bo re- ■ gretted that Mr A. Grubb was not present. Mr Grubb was lying seriously ill in the hospital, but he had sent a message wishing the carnival every -Success. Mr Moller said it was not possible to mention all those who had worked so hard in the interests of the fair, but he particularly referred to Mr C. J. Davie (chairman of the Carnival Committee), Mrs C. F. George (chairwoman), .Mr L. Roberts (secretary), i Mr I. Stevenson (treasurer), and Mrs i A. Thomson, who had acted as pianist ; at all the entertainments held in connection with the carnival. Over £IOC ■ had been raised as a result of these I entertainments. The band was making i great improvement, and, ns fifteen new young players had joined up, it was necessary to procure new instruments. He thanked the people of the district for the interest taken in the entertainments and in the carnival.. It was hoped that the people would spend freely and that the carnival would be the succuss it deserved. The stallholders were: Work Stall. —Mesdames A. G. Thomson, C. F. George, Mncandrew, Lamond, W. Connor, H. M'Donald. Produce Stall. —Mesdames T. Harridgo, L. Gillanders, Misses Anderson, Blue. Flower Stall.-—Mrs H. P. Pickerill, Misses M. Moller, K. Pickerill, J. Robb, P. Evans. ; Refreshment Room and Cake Stall.— Mesdames A. Young, Hanly, Shanks, Misses Young (2), Thomson, Calder, Horan, Christenson, S>ratt (2), Leach, Connor (2). * Sweets Stall.—Mesdames A. Campbell, Williamson, Misses Thorriicroft, Robb, Hudson, Kearney, Mr I. Reid. Band Queen Stall. —Mesdames A. Newey, Stevenson, Macdonald, Buchanan, Miss Bardsley. ‘ Jumble Stalk—Mesdames T. Rodgers, Grubb, Misses Donaldson, George. Tennis Queen Stall.—Mrs D. Mackenzie, Misses N. George, Mackenzie, M'Hutcheon, Hardy, ; Christmas Tree.—Mrs J. Bain. Bran Tubs. —Mesdames E. Leach, M. A. Spratt. Side Attraction.—Mrs L. Nash. Prior to the opening, the West Harbor Band played several selections outside the hall. _ The carnival will be continued each evening, and will conclude on Saturday pight.,
