MANAWATU GORGE BLOCK

EXPLOSIVES USED FUST BUST IHEFFECTIVE [Psoc United Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., November 18. Blasting operations, with a view to removing the menace of a further landslide on the railway in Manawatu Gorge, commenced this morning, when traffic on the road side of the gorge was suspended. Four charges in the long base wall and one under a huge rock just above the line were exploded seriatim. The first four blew out from the wall like a discharge-of artillery ; but, beyond making holes 6ft to 10ft across, failed in the mission of sending the wall down the bank. The other charge on the hillside was also noneffeetive, as the big rock lifted, and afterwards appeared untouched. Further is proceeding, and water pipes are being laid high up on the hillside over this point, with a view to resorting to sluicing operations when the explosives have been used more effectively.
