MUSSELBURGH SCHOOL

DEPUTATION TO EDUCATION BOARD A deputation from the Musselburgh School Committee waited on tho Education Board this morning to ask that improvements be made to the school conveniences, and that the infant department be remodelled. Mr D. C. Cameron (chairman of the school committee) pointed out that the working of tho conveniences was very unsatisfactory, and that the system needed-to bo brought up to date. Iheie were about 600 children in the school, and their health was at stake by reason of the terrible stench which was caused. Tho committee had been told that the system was the best known when it was installed twenty-one years ago; that might have been correct, but it was not the best to-day. Tho committee also asked that the infant room be remodelled. Mr D. Ramsay suggested that the system in use in other schools might bo installed. Mr Wallace (Chairman) said the same system was in operation in other schools in Dunedin, and worked very satisfactorily. Their architect said it was not the system that was at fault, ■but the water “pressure at Musselburgh. It would cost over £4OO to put in the latest system, and neither the board nor the’Government had the money to do that.

Mr Cameron said the water pressure was all right. He thought too much was expected of the system. The Chairman: “I promise you the board will do something, Ido not hold out any hope of getting a new'-system because the same system is working satisfactorily in other schools.” He added that members of the board would probably visit tho school and inspect tho system. When the deputation had withdrawn the board decided to approach the Education Department for a grant tor ihe remodelling of the infant room.
