The secret of the famous “ sawingthrough ” illusion, the big trick of most magicians, was revealed by Sir Edward Marshall Hall, K.C., during the hearing of. a libel case before the , King’s Bench. Frederick Abbott, whose stage name is Charcot, is suing eleven newspapers for having reprinted a report relating to a scene at Waterford, when the trick miscarried. Sir Edward explained that a girl entered a box. Ropes were attached to her neck, hands, and feet. The audience held the ends of the ropes. The girl cut the ropes and knotted the ends, preventing withdrawal. She then huddled herself in one end of the box before it was sawn through.
