THIEVES FALL OUT
FAMOUS KILLER KILLED DETROIT, November 3. After baffling the efforts of the entire American Police Force to capture him, James Cunniffe, notorious gunman, killer, and bandit, was shot dead in a quarrel with his confederates. In the bandits’ lair, which exhibited signs of a desperate struggle, was Cunniffe’s girl companion, also dead. Scattered about the room was 20,000 dollars’ worth of currency, part of the booty of a recent mail robbery. The detectives’ reconstruction of the killing of Cunniffe indicates that the »ang met to share out the loot. ° Presumably Cunniffe insisted on the girl receiving an equal share with tho men in addition to his taking the largest proportion as leader, and a quarrel arose. In the subsequent fight Cunniffe was fatally shot, and his confederates, fearing the girl would avenge her lover by giving information to the police, killed her also. Then, panic-stricken, tho bandits tied, leaving tho booty strewn about the floor- *. , , ■ His exploits culminated m tho killing of a mail guard in a train robbery. Following this United States marines reinforced the police in tho hunt for Cunniffe and his gang.
