Sir Willian Sim will return to Dunedin from Wellington to-morrow. Gipsy Smith, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Young, arrived by the express from the north yesterday. Inspector Cameron (Christchurch) is in charge of tho local police district during the absence of Superintendent Mathicson. The death took place at tho Mastcrton Hospital last night of Mr Goorgo Augustus Fairbrother, of Carterton*, aged sixtyeight. Tho deceased tvas well known throughout the Wairarapa. Ho was the first white child bom at Carterton, and his father -was tho first mayor of that town. The deceased also served a term as mayor.—Press Association telegram. Mr W. Highet, who has been a guard on the Dunedin-Port Chalmers railway for the past twelve years, has been transferred to Picton, and promoted to goods foreman. His Port Chalmers friends presented him with a travelling bag and with a case of cutlery for Mrs Highet. _ Mr Highet was very popular with shipping interests, as well as suburban passengers.
