BRIBERY CHARGES

HEW SOUTH WALES IHQUIRY THE PREMIER GIVES EVIDENCE. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, October 22. (Received October 22, at 8.05 a.m.) The Premier (Air Lang), giving evidence before the Bribery Select Committee, caused a sensation when he said that tho committee was not properly extending the scope of the inquiry, in that it should have included events connected with the Legislative Council, as well as the Assembly. •

This view ivas strongly opposed by Dr Evaot, the chairman, who staled that the commit toe was carrying out the

terms of the resolution laid down by tho Assembly. Mr Lank then stated that he had of the opinion that the article in the Labor daily newspaper was used as a stalking-horse for an attack on him, and ho did nob put the serious construction on it that some people did. Again referring to the Council, he said that he certainly thought that there should be some inquiry how Labor members of li e Council had betrayed the party by their dishonored word, and stopped the progrcss_ of the party in tho, most vital aspects in connection with the abolition ol the Council. Air Lang then stated tlita ho had been credibly informed by a member of the Nationalist Council that he was going to get four members of . tho Labor Party to cross the floor of the House and vote with the Nationalists, or stay away when Die vote was taken. This member of tho Nationalist Party was a high Government official, and in fairness to him Air Lang would not divulge his name, -which the committee did not piess for.
