REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS AT OPENING The second playing season of the St. Clair Croquet Club was opened under happy and encouraging conditions yesterday afternoon. The attendance at tho grounds in lugs avenue numbered about 100, being swelled by members of the croquet clubs of Balclutha, Mosgiel, Punga, and Balmacewen accepting the invitation. The three lawns that were used last season looked exceedingly well, and the fourth lawn—tho new one and the biggest—presented an attractive appearance, experienced players fancying that it may become a favorite for the more important games. Airs L. Seohof, the president, welcomed the visitors in a neat little speech, and gratefully acknowledged the excellent services of Air J. Forbes, the caretaker. Airs T. Fleming, the immediate past president, rolled wp the first ball, having conic from Timnni to spend an afternoon with her former colleagues. Games, and competitions and afternoon tea, with croquet for the visitors, kept the party fully occupied, and the afternoon passed off most sociably. The committee thanked the Bowling Club for the loan of outdoor seats and crockery. Tho last of the series of social functions for the season is to take the form of a card party, preparations for which are in tho sure hands of the able secretary, Airs R. APNaughton.
