Miss Whitson is back after a long stay at Remuera. Mrs Fall, of Nelson, is the guest of Lady Ferguson. Professor and Mrs Dickie came back to-day from Queenstown. Mrs F. M'Christie is staying at Albyn House Mrs Tapley, sen., has gone to Waimato for two or three weeks. The following Girl Guidcrs were successful in passing their first aid examination, which also entitles them to their first-class badge. The lecturer was Sister A. E. Kirkpatrick and the examiner Dr Helen Easterfield. The names are not in order of merit: —Misses Barnett, Batchelor, Clarke, Feichlcy, Halstcd, Roberts, and Watts. Mr and Mrs C. R. Chapman will soon bo back in Dunedin. They are duo to leave this month for New York, and from there will sail for Auckland. Mrs Marshall Macdonald (provincial commissioner of the Girl Guides) _ and Mrs Dallas, of Balclutha (divisional commissioner), have just concluded a tour of South Otago, among the districts visited being Balclutha, Owaka, and Tapanui. Mrs Malcolm gave a very jolly party last Friday at tho Women’s Club for members of tho Lady Medicals’ Association and a few others. Competitions and items by Mesdames Ewing, Rodgerson, Reid, Misses Dutton and Watson made the evening all too short. Lady Ferguson the other day gave a tea party for Mrs Chapman (nco Miss (Maxwell), who has recently come hero. Other guests included Mesdames Maxwell, Stiles, Gailaway, Edwards, S. Neill. Moss, M'Kcllar, and Matheson, and Misses Blomficld and Matheson. Tho dances that were recently given on Saturdays at tho Christian Brothers’ School, Tennyson street, were so successful that it has been decided to start them again, further particulars of which will bo advertised. These informal dances help to augment the Redcnstle College fund, which is progressing slowly but surely. Race week concluded quite appropriately with a race ball at tlio Tudor Hall, which, as ono would expect, was lavishly decorated with exquisite blooms. Special features of the evening wore exhibition dances of tho Charleston by Heaton and Strange, from Fullers’, and a vocal solo by Brian Lawrence, “ tho hoy from Eton,” who is appearing in Williamson’s vaudeville. Altogether the evening stood out as ono of tho most successful of tho season. Tho closing of tho 1926 session of tho St. Clair Women’s Club took tho form of a social, which was held in tho handsome new pavilion _ recently erected by tho St. Clair Bowling Club. About 130 members and friends wero urcsent, and the president (Mrs Waters, who ivore a handsome black georgette frock trimmed with silver) vdcomed the guests in a very happy little speech. Cards wero played till 10 o’clock, when a dainty supper was partaken of, after which the floor was cleared for dancing. Tho Wembley Club held its first plain and fancy dress dance in the Early Settlers’ 'Hall on Saturday evening, and it was a most successful affair, about 300 dancers attending. Tho Ritz Orchestra, comprising six soloists, provided delightful music for the old and tho new dances. Mrs Barrett, Mr J. Kendall, and Mr S. Lawn, of Arthur Barnett, Ltd., judged the fancy dresses, and the prizes wore presented by Mr Lawn to tho followingßest fancy dress, lady, Miss J. George (black piorette); gentleman, Mr _S. Jamieson (sailor boy); most original costume, Miss A. Montgomery (tennis girl); best poster costume, Miss Florrio Parker (danger signals).

Wives of tho professors and lecturers, as well as final year students, were the guests of the Otago University Women Students’ Club last week, in tho Somerset Lounge, the room being beautifully decorated with flowers. Miss Barrowclough and bliss Jolly received the guests, and during the evening, items were given by Miss Jeffreys, Miss Carson, and Miss Matthews. Advantage was taken of the presence of Mrs H. Skinner to wish her a happy voyage to America, w'hero she will join her husband, who has been awarded a valuable Rockefeller scholarship.

Tho Women’s Club is a most useful institution for entertaining visitors, and last Saturday saw another happy gathering—this time of visiting players in the Now Zealand ladies’ golf championships, and members of tho Otago ; golf clubs. A varied programme was 1 provided, consisting or plays by the | Play-reading Circle, violin and piano ' items and songs by Mrs R. Hudson. ! For those who preferred it, bridge was available, and the addition of an ■ excellent supper showed that no pains had been spared to welcome tho visitors ■ in a truly hospitable manner.

} Last Friday M'Glashan College gave a most enjoyable dance in tho spacious I dining hall, which was lavishly i decorated with balloons of the college colors (red, blue, and gold)._ One end was screened off with Union Jacks, behind which tho supper tables also , carried on the school color scheme. Mr and Mrs Gilray and Miss Oliver received the guests, among whom were girls of the three principal private schools, others including Mr and Mrs T. C. Ross, Mr and Mrs Simmers, blisses Ross, M'Cnllura, Skinner, Glendinning, and Wallace. At the end ot the dance the boys gave rousing cheers for the matron and others who had helped. The Art Gallery last Friday was the scene of unusual interest to DuncdSuites, when His Excellency Sir Charles Fergusson hold an investiture. After the ceremony Their Excellencies, with several of the guests, adjourned to afternoon tea, among them being Sir Cbas. Stntham, Sir John Roberts, and ! Mrs G. The Girl Guide' movement is going along quite briskly nowadays, companies being formed in various districts. Last week the Ist Tapanui Company was enrolled, Mrs Marshall Macdonald (Provincial Commissioner) and Mrs Dallas, of Balclutha (South Otago Divisional Commissioner), tiling to attend the ceremony. Mrs Thomson (the District Commissioner), Miss Parry (the ranger captain), Miss Edgar (the Guido captain), Misses Thomson and Mackenzie (lieutenants), and Mrs M’Leod (district secretary) were first enrolled; then followed Guidcrs, Guides, and Rangers, and Mesdames Hill, Burns, Cameron, and Quin as additional executive members. Mrs Macdonald and Mrs Dallas spoke to a most appreciative audience about the movement and its aims, for which they were thanked by all present. Supper and games ended tho successful

evening on a lighter tone. The improved weather conditions of Saturday helped to swell the attendance at Wingatui for the races. Their Excellencies, accompanied by Mr Keswick, arrived after the second race, and were received by the president of the Jockey Club (Mr Hanlon) and Mrs and Miss Hanlon. Her Excellency wore a handsome gown of cinnamon georgette, the velour hat with smart feather mount toning in beautifully; and her black satin coat gave an added elegance to her toilet. Mrs Hanlon looked very well in tabac georgette, with a hat. to match and a fur coat. Others present included Mesdames Dalgety Orbell, Murray-Aynsley (Christchurch), R. Orbell. Black, Choeseman, Lusk, Barron, Jenkins, Priest, J. Neil, Edmond, G. Ritchie, Hazlett, Cotterill, Nancarrow, N. Haggitt, T. Brown, Leech, Mills, Hall, Groenslado, MTvellar, Ramsay, Fitzgerald (Oamarn), M'Qucen, Reid, A. Barnett, W. A. Moore, O’Neill, Smeaton, Hislop, Misses Barnett, Priest, Batchelor, Orbell, Fitzgerald/ Halstcd (2), Grabame, Nancarrow, Stock, Reynolds, Farqnhar, Bridgeman, Heywood, and bUQueen. The annual meeting of tho Otago Women’s Club was held on Monday, and proved to be the best attended yet held, fully 300 members being present. This was only right, as much of importance was under discussion. As a result of the voting Lady Ferguson was unanimously ro-clcctcd as president, tho vicepresidents being Airs Edmond, Airs Hewitson, and Mrs Blues; while next year’s committee is Mesdames Ewing, Gilkison, W. Holmes. C. M. Begg, Melville, Oldham, T. C. Ross, Hutchison, bliss Ross, and Miss Williams. Lady Ferguson, in her presidential address, congratulated all the circles on their successful year, and singled out the still very juvenile motor circle for special commendation on the way in which it was helping the hospital authorities. Two important motions were passed, tho first being that for the future the number of members be unlimited (quite a sensible resolution, as on most days in the week tho club is not nearly full); tho second insisting that at least 5 per cent, of tho total members must vote for any proposed now member. Mrs Falconer seconded the adoption of the balance-sheet, and at the end of the meeting Mrs Johnson proposed a vote of thanks to Lady Ferguson and the committee for all their hard work throughout the year. Mrs Callan, Mrs Chapman, and Miss Morrison acted as scrutineers for the balloting, and so the club said good-bye to another year of its lifo.
