DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB'S RASES

COURSE DRIED SURPRISINGLY GOOD RACING,- WELL MANAGED The attendance at Wingatui yesterday for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting seemed scarcely up to the usual, but the racing was such as to stimulate interest} and when tho totalieator aggregate was made up it was seen that it was only £763 short of last year. _ Gordon s professional orchestra supplied the music. Tho course was in wonderful!}' good order considering the soaking it had early in the week. The stewards ana officials worked well under _ tho disadvantage of being housed in a temporary tin shed, and tho day proved to bo pleasant in all respects, for the wind was not at all strong. The second half of the programme brought about tho following results; — TRIAL STAKES, 200sovs; second 40sovs, third 20. 6f. 10—H. J. Riddle’s Spearmaid (Greyspoar—Marginal), 8.0 (J. Andrews) 1 9—S. G. Wave’s Polly Flinders, 7.11 (W. .Cooper) 2 12—J. Carter’s Royal Saxon, 8.2 (P. Powell) 3

Others: 13 Ballinagard (car. 8.9. H. Anderton), 1 Gold Mint (8.5, J. Beale), £> Killbox (8.2, C. Emerson), s.Crossbow (8.2, L. Pine), 7 Battle Colors (3.2, F. Voight), 11 Sightseer (8.2, A. Didham), 3 French Bello (8.0, L. J. Ellis), 2 Royal Kilt (car. 7.13, J. Lloyd), Dioxide (car. 7.3, N. Dwyer, coupled with Polly Flinders), 4 Miss Flighty (7.11, C. Eastwood), 8 Lady Dilatory (7.11, T. Metcalf). Tho start was perfect, but Ballinagard got chopped out at once. Polly Flinders smartly established a lead, Royal Saxon and Miss Flighty going on "next. So they travelled right into tho straight, Crossbow following,_ and no change took place til! well inside tho distance, where Spearmaid, who had been lying behind tho loaders, made a deciding run, and boat Polly Flinders by a little more than a length, third a length further back, Crossbow and Battle Colors next. Time, linin 19sec.

ELECTRIC HANDICAP, SOOsovs: second GOsovs, third 30. 6f. S—T. Russell’s Dancing Days (Markhopo—Princess Mosca), 7.0 (R. Beale) 1 10— A. H. Fisher’s Comic Song, 8.4 (P. Powell) 2 11— J. E. Rogers’s Set Sail, 9.2 (A. S. Ellis') 3

Ellis), 13 Dangle (car. 7.0, A. Eastwood), Corn Rigs (7.0, T. Metcalf, coupled with Corn Money), 9 Papcrchaso (7.0, C. Eastwood), 12 Paper Boy (car. 7.4, It. Covcney). Dancing Days was quickest _ away From a good start, and stuck in the lead all the time, attended the whole journey by Comic Song and Set Sail. Bugle Note got chopped out shortly after the start. Dancing Days won by four lengths, third three lengths further back, then Corn Rigs and Corn Money practically together, and Paper Boy next. Time. Imin 16 1-oseo.

TAIOMA HANDICAP, 200sovs- second 40sovs. third 20sovs. Cr. 4—T. Harrison’s Arrowmir (Arrowsmith—Vladimir mare), 8.6 (A. E. Ellis) 1 2—J. A. Ainge’s Pink Terrace, 8.10 (F. Voight) 2 1— D. P. Wilson’s Black Duke, 8.8 (A. Didham) 3 Others: 5 Olympia (8.2, J. Beale), 3 Credit (8.0, C. Emerson), 6 Hungry Hill (8.0, A. Lloyd). Arrowmir and Black Duke led Olympia and Pink Terrace into the straight, whore Black Duke tired, and Pink Terrace chased Arrowmir, the latter winning by a couple of lengths, Black Duke five lengths away, Olympia fourth. Time, Imin 16 4-ssec. OCTOBER HANDICAP, 225sovs; second 45sovs, third 22J. Im. 4—W. T. Hazlett’s_ xkpaclie (Solferino —Dircctoiro), 8.2 (F. J. M‘Kay) 1 2 J. T. Ainge’s Pink Note, 9.5 (C. Others: 3 John Bradbury (9.0, J. Beale), 8 Bonnie Winkio (8.8, P. Powell), 2 Miss Winkio (8.5, A. Lloyd), 9 Some Kid (car. 8.9, H. Anderton), 7 All Style (8.1, B. Brodie), 5 Cornflower (8.0, F. Voight). Cornflower lost ground from a good start. Pink Noto was at once passed by Some Kid, but Apacbe and Miss Winkio held tho lead when all were settled in their places. In tho straight John Bradbury looked dangerous, but he fell away, and so did Miss Winkie, and tho finish was an unavailing attempt by Pink Note to catch Apache, who won by half a length, Monoxide two lengths away, John Bradbury fourth. Time, Imin 41 2-useo.

NOTES ON THE RACING With snow on tho surrounding hills and half the Taieri under water, the Wingatui course had the appearance of a winter meeting rather than of a spring fixture yesterday morning, but the strong wind which blew throughout t.ho previous night dried up the course splendidly, and tho going was sound, but dead and improving all the afternoon. The racing was interesting, but followers of favorites had a disastrous day, only one, High Goar, winning during the afternoon. The big dividends paTd by Coastguard, Some Rose, Spearmaid, and Dancing Days were responsible for the shrinkage in the totalisator returns, the day’s turnover (£17,1825) showing a drop of £763 on the corresponding day last year. The attendanco was satisfactory ipr an off day, and the outside public appreciated their new quarters and the improved view of tho horses in the birdcage. Tho M'Lean Stakes, the first South Island classic of the season, produced an excellent field and race, and tho favorite, Fair Exchange, had every chance, but was not good enough over tho last furlong to shake off Some Rose, who was on tho outside of him all tho way. Had Ark Royal gone away smartly from the barrier ho would probably have won, as the run ho put in down tho straight was a splendid one. Full Swing did not have ns good a run in the Mosgiel Handicap as Rivalry, but the latter led all the way, and just stayed on long enough to heat the In-vercargill-trained mare _ by a narrow margin. The latter finished well, and would certainly have won had the race been a furlong further. Dancing Days made a runaway race of the Electric Handicap, and, though the top weights, Set Sail and Comic Song, tried hard to _ catch her, tho little Oamaru mare finished full of running, and won very easily, and returned her" backers a double-figure dividend. At the far turn in this race Roscnor galloped on to Wnrhavon’s heels, cutting him badly, and nearly fell himself. In recovering ho strained ono of his forelegs badly, and when ho pulled up he was very lame, and, his owner says it is not likely ho will he able to race him again. Apache won the October Welter very well, and stalled off a determined challenge from Pink Note over tnc last fur°T!:e Hurdle Race proved a good thing for the locally-trained Coastguard, who jumped well throughout and outstayed

the opposition over the last quarter ot a mile. Gay Bachelor was going well when he struck a fence hard and unseated his rider, but ho had not been fencing cleanly throughout the race, and had probably had enough when he met with this accident. High Gear won the Maungatua Handicap from Royal Game only in the last few strides, and it was not a highly impressive victory; but it is difficult to say how much Ellis had in hand at the finish, and it was certainly a good winding-up gallop for the Guineas tomorrow. • Spcarmaid, who ran well in small races in Southland several times last season, beat several well-fancied candidates in the Trial Stakes, and returned the dividend of the meeting. The rider of Polly Flinders, who led all tho way to the last few strides, had to be attended to by a doctor on returning to scale, and he says had he been well enough to handle his mount as he should have done he would have won. The Taiomn Handicap attracted the smallest field of the day, and saw Arrowmir beat two well-lancied candidates in Pink Terrace and Black Duke very easily. Working under most adverse conveniences, the meeting was excellently managed by Mr H. L. James and stall, and punctuality was closely observed. Mr M'lvor’s starting was good and prompt. . . , There was a strong, biting N.B. wind blowing when the field, minus Dubious and Axle, paraded for the Spring Hurdles, and on bis Geraldine running Wharncliffo was sent out slightly better backed than Guncase, who was a little lame behind, suffering from a tender hoof edused through shoeing, with Bachelor Gay, who looked_ much improved by last week’s _ racing, almost as well backed. Captain Sarto, Bonomci. Mazama, and Coastguard (ridden by C. Dawson) were the best backed of the others. Happy Days and Captain Sarto led Bachelor Gay and Coastguard to the first fence. At the stand fence Captain Sarto showed the way over the stand hurdle to Bachelor Gay and Happy Days, Wharncliffo and Mazama whipping in the field. At the mile post Bachelor Gay jumped to the front, and led Bonomel and Coastguard into the back stretch. Wharncliffo improved his position going along the back, and at the far turn "Bachelor Gay was leading Bonomel, Coastguard, and Wharnchiio up the bill. The nest fence proved fatal to Bachelor Gay, who hit it hard and unseated his rider. Coastguard led Guncase, Wharncliffo, and Bonomel into the straight and over the last fence. He drew away in the run home to win by four lengths from Guncase, with Wharncliffo two lengths further back. Bonomel and Soldier’s Pride were next, the others beaten off. Tjme, 3mm 28 3-ssec. Totalisator, £1,3751. Cornstalk (who did not come south), Sir Roy, Battle Colors, and Prompter were withdrawn from the Maungatua Hack Handicap, for which High Gear, ridden by A. E. Ellis, was made a warm favorite, with Margaret Birney and Waterlow, who bled while doing her preliminary, almost equally backed. Royal Game, Lady Clarenccux, and the New Zealand Cup candidate Divinial were the next best supported. Royal Game quickly showed out, and at the end of two furlongs was a couple of lengths clear of High Gear and Margaret Birney. At the home turn Royal Game was still a couple of lengths clear of the favorite, who challenged the North Islander at the distance post, and in a good finish just beat him by a head, with Margaret Birney over two lengths away third. Bilbo, Lady Clarenceux, and Jolly Glad, who was last turning into the straight, next. Divinial jumped out well, but gradually dropped back and finished last. Time, Imin 30 4-osec. Totalisator, £2,042. Only Tripaway was withdrawn from the M'Lcan Stakes, and a well-condi-tioned field of ten two-year-olds paraded, the Christchurch-trained Fair Exchange being made_ a hot favorite, with Solgelo just a little better backed than Ark Royal, Rotor, Starlight, and the Riverton-trained Some Rose (Some Boy ll.—Rose de Val), ridden by N. C. Dwyer. From a good line Some Rose and Fair Exchange were quick to show out. Appian Way and Ark Royal being slow to get going. Some Rose and Fair Exchange, who was on the rails, led Solgolo and Rotor round the far turn and up the hill. Some Rose had a slight advantage over Fair Exchange as they turned into the straight, and at the distance post Some Rose had the mare in trouble, and a little later Solgelo also tackled Fair Exchange. Opposite the stand Ark Royal came with a great run, hut just failed to catch Some Rose by a longnock. Solgelo was a head away third, a head in front of Fair Exchange, with Starflight and Rotor next. Time, Imin 5 i-ssec. * Totalisator, £1,741^. All started in the Mosgiel Handicap, for which Full Swing was sent out a strong favorite, with the bracketed pair, Ravenna and Overdrawn, a good second selection, and Footfall and Rivalry, ridden oy C. Eastwood, next in demand. Full Swing, on the rails, and Rivalry led out of the straight from Ravenna, and after passing the mile post Full Swing gave way_ to Rivalry and Ravenna, who led into and along the back stretch from Overdrawn, Mountain Lion running last. There was no change until turning for home, where Rivalry was a length and a-half clear of Ravenna, with Overdrawn just in front of Full Swing on the rails. At the distance post Full Swing was on terms with the bracketed pair, but failed to reach Rivalry by a long neck. Ravenna and Overdrawn were together four lengths further back. Heather Lad was six lengths further back, and Mountain Lion last. Time. 2min 12 4-sscc. Totalisator. £2,5.>3J. Only All Colors and_ Credit wore withdrawn from the Trial Stakes, for which Gold Mint was sent out a good favorite, with Royal Kilt, French Belle, and Miss Flighty the next best backed. From a good start Ballinagard was chopped out, and Polly Flinders was the first to show out, being followed round the far turn by Royal Saxon, Miss Flighty, and Crossbow. At the home turn Polly Flinders was well clear of Miss Flighty, Royal Saxon, ami Crossbow. At tho distance post Polly Flinders looked a sure winner, but Spearmaid, ridden by J. T. Andrews, came with a very fast run, and beat her home by just over a length, with Royal Saxon a length off third. Crossbow, Battle Colors, and Gold Mint were next. Time, Irnin 19sec. Totalisator £2,OSS. Tho winner was tenth favorite.

In the Electric Handicap Volant., Arpbnt, Countersign, and Clontan were withdrawn, and in a good betting race the bracketed pair, Corn Money and Corn Rigs, was made a little better favorite than Lava, with Circnlation, Carnot, Bugle Note, and Warhaven also well backed. From a good start, Corn Rigs standing behind the line, Dancing Days was first out, and led Comic Song and Set Sail out, Corn Money, Carnot, and Paper Boy being the last to move. Dancing Days led round the far turn from Comic Song, Lava, and Sot Sail, who were racing together. At the homo turn Dancing Days, ridden by Rex Beale, was two lengths clear from Comic Song, Lava, Set Sail, and Corn Rigs. At the distance post the latter stepped, and Dancing Days stayed on to win easily by four lengths from_ Comic _ Song, and Set Saif was a similar distance off third, followed by Corn Rigs, Corn Money, Paper Roy, and Bugle Note, who, starting on the rails, got chopped out at the harrier. Time, Imin 16 l-osec. Totalisator, £2,4Hi. The betting on the Taioma Hack Handicap, for which only six horses started, was practically confined to Black Duke and Pink Terraco, with Credit and Arrowmir, ridden by A. E. Ellis, next in order. Arrowmir, Black Duke, and Olympic ran abreast to the foot of the hill, where the latter dropped out, and Arrowmir, on_ the rails, led Black Duke into, the straight.

At the distance Pink Terrace challenged Armvmir, hut could not reach tlm Goldfields-owncd horse, who won by two lengths, with Black Duke five lengths ofl third. Olympia and Credit were next, well beaten oil. Time, Imin 16 4-ssec. Totalisator, £2,116. Warhavon (wiio was badly galloped on in the Electric Handicap), Eaton Bells, _ Front Rank, Corn Rigs, and Jarretiere were withdrawn from the October Welter, in which Pink _Noto was wall hacked, with Miss Winkio and John Bradbury also in demand, the best supported of the others being Anncho (ridden by bis trainer, P. J. M'Kay), and Cornflower, who was left it the post, next in demand. Some Kid, Apacho, and Pink Note ran abreast for a furlong, and at the sixfurlong post Apache was just showing in front of Miss Winkie and John Bradbury. At the far turn Miss Winkie was just in front of Apache and John Bradbury, and they turned into the straight in that order. John Bradbury just headed Apache and Miss Winkio at the distance post, but could not go on with his run, and Pink Note challenged Apache over the last hundred yards. In a good finish Apache stayed on to win by half a_ length from the favorite, with Monoxide two lengths off third, followed by John Bradbury, Bonnie Winkio, and Miss Winkio. Time, Imin 46 2-ssec. Totalisator, £2,824).
