MARRIAGES AT SEA
AH AMERICAN LAWPOINT The romance of “cupid of the high seas ” has received a rude shock by the ruling of Mr Justice Parker, of the General Council of tho United States Shipping Board, says a despatch from Washington, that the masters of Government-owned merchant vessels have no authority to perform marriages at sea. According to legal opinion, it was stated, a marriage performed at sea by tho master of an American vessel had no greater validity than if performed by a passenger. While expressing no view regarding tho validity of such marriages already performed, the council found it was possible that they might bo valid under the marriage statutes of the States in which the ships are registered. This opinion was given as the result of a communication from the State Department based on inquiries received from a foreign Government. The difficulty is said to have arisen from tho fact that the United States has not got federal marriage laws.
