ENGINE TOPPLES ON BARGE
A HARBOW ESCAPE [Fra Us iron Press Associatiob.] DARGAVILLE, September 10. An exciting incident took place al ih<; Pukehuia public works on Wednesday evening, when three men had a narrow escape from lasing their lives. Railway work is at present in progress on this” section of the line, and an engine and trucks arc in use for conveying the metal along a spillway from barges on the river close by. Oi; Wednesday the engine and a truck of metal got out of liand and toppled over the end of the spillway, falling on to the launch and barge below, sinking them both, and eventually going to the bottom of the river themselves.
Tho driver of the engine, a man named Shaw, managed to get clear of the engine ws it reached the water, and two men. Kransen and Hanson, on tho launch also managed to got clear, all reaching the shore .safely without injury. A gang is now engaged in salvage operations.
