ARREST FOR ARSON
[Per Us'ited Press Association.] ' NEW PLYMOUTH, August LI, If rumor speaks truly there were ■ some sensational happenings on the Upper M ngorei farms on a recent day. It is alleged that a fanner found that an oaten stack on his place had been burnt to the ground. About the same time a settler opposite discovered that part of Iris separator was missing. On Saturday morning the owner of tho burnt haystack awoko to find his :
cowshed alight. Ha put it out, but almost immediately afterwards " Rawsmoke rising from a stack on an adjacent farm. lie rushed over and gave tho alann, and some of the hay was saved. As a result of inquiries by Detective Meiklcjohn, a man named Harris L. Spence was arrested aiid brought before the court to-day on three charges of arson, one of theft, a'nd one of mischief. On tho application of the detective, he was remanded till Wednesday, but an application for bail was opposed by the police and refused by the magistrate.
