The Waikouaiti will sail to-morrow for Lyttelton, Wellington, and Sydney. She will load again for Bluff, Dunedin, and Lyttelton. The Kamo was due to-day from Westport via Bluff to discharge a part cargo of coal and to load general cargo for Napier and Gisborne. The Ruapehu is scheduled to leave London towards tho end of August with cargo for discharge at Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. The Gale is due to-night from Wanganui via ports. She will sail to-mor-row for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui.. The Port Campbell left Port Chalmers this morning to complete her loading for United Kingdom ports at Timaru, Lyttelton, Wanganui roadstead, and Wellington. Tho Breeze is duo on Tuesday from Wanganui via ports to load for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and VVangautn. She will sail tho same day. The Union liner Manuka will bo recommissioned at Port Chalmers about the middle of next week. She is scheduled to sail from Dhnodin on August 21 for .Melbourne via Bluff. Tho Baron Kelvin is due at Auckland about August 16 from Sydney (Cape Breton), .Montreal, and Newport News via Panama. She will continue discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Sydney. The Waipahi is duo on Sunday from Auckland via ports, and will sail on Monday for Bluff. She will probably return to Dunedin to load for Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland, Tito ’Waihora will load at Newcastle about August 18 for Port Chalmers. The Shaw, Savi.ll steamer Kin, Ora, fron) Liverpool via Auckland, will leave Wellington on Saturday for Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete discharge. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Maori, from 'Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.45 a.m. to-day,, and passengers and mails connected, with the 12.20 p.m. express. PANAMA CANAL AND SALVAGE. The marine superintendent of the Panama Canal has given notice that the canal will not in future engage in salvage operations in other than canal zone waters. The only exception to this ruling will bo whore great emergency exists, the emergency to he determined by the superintendent. Commercial salvage companies, it is added, have established an adequate station in the Carribcan area, and are in a position to take care of all salvage operations. Tho Panama Canal will continue to despatch tugs for the purpose of bringing disabled vessels into port, provided such vessels are not disabled at a greater distance than 1,000 miles from the Atlantic or Pacific terminals of the canal, the distancas to he determined by tho nearest sea route. PACIFIC MAIL SERVICE, Niagara left Vancouver July 28 for Auckland and Sydney via Honolulu and Suva; duo Auckland August, 16, and Sydney August 21. Tahiti left Sydney August 12 and Wellington August 17 for San Francisco via Rarotonga and Papeete; duo San Francisco September 3. Tho Tofiia leaves Auckland at 11 a.rn. on Saturday for Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa. Tho Ngakuta, from Cook Islands, is duo at Auckland on Sunday. THE OLD MANAWATU. After fifty-three years 5 service the small composite built steamer Manawatii is to ho converted into a hulk in | Australia. The career of the vessel ■ is of more than passing interest to New Zealanders, because she was built at Auckland in 1873, and her long service reflects great credit on the workman-! ship of local shipbuilders. Her tonange is 183 gross, and she is Pi-teMt lorn;, with an 18.7 ft beam, and 9.6 ft depth. After being launched she wa.> engaged , for some time in the Wellington- j Manawatn trade. Later sho was sold ; to Australian owners, and since then 1 she Ims been engaged for a considerable time in tho Melbourne-Tasmanian ser-

OPAWA FROM LIVERPOOL, The steamer Opawa is due at Auckland about August 23 from Liverpool via Panama. Tho vessel is bringing general cargo for discharge at Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She should arrive at this port about September 11. AUSTRALIAN LOADING, There is still difficulty in obtaining outward cargoes for ships leaving Victoria. The West Henshaw, which brought a large cargo from America to Melbourne, was forced to sail for the Philippines in ballast to pick up a loading there. The City of Bombay has been lying in the bay awaiting orders, pending the loading of a very small cargo for South Africa, and the latest ship to bo laid up is the General Botha, which came to Victoria on a charter, and is unable to pick up any outward cargo. Tho four-masted barque Ponape has been lying in the bay for several weeks without orders, and there is no sign of a loading being obtainable for her. TOFU A FROM FIJI. • The Union Company’s island steamer Tofiia arrived at Anckland on Monday evening with passengers, mails, and cargo from Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji. Included in the cargo was about 16,000 cases of fruit. Since leaving Auckland on July 17 she experienced generally fair weather round the islands, and the voyage was uneventful. After discharge she will be docked for cleaning and painting. To-morrow she is to be despatched on her return trip to the Islands. The vessel will then proceed to Wanganui roadstead, Now Plymouth, and Wellington, where she is duo on August 26. From Wellington she will proceed to Napier, Waikokopu, Gisborne, and Auckland. Her final departure from tho last-mentioned port will be taken on September 13 for Glasgow, Liverpool, London, ami Avonmouth. She will have cargo also for Manchester. THE MONTAGUE. For further. loading for Auckland and other Now Zealand ports, tho Swaync and Hovt Line steamer Montague left Vancouver on August 2 for San Francisco and San Pedro.
