WORLD’S GREATEST SPONGE
In Southern California, -.vhcrc land without water is worth little, various moans have to bo adopted to conserve tlio winter rainfall for the dry summer months. From JMay till October landowners depend on the underground water supply. A recent development lias been the construction of a vast natural “sponge” destined to hold the Hood waters from the great canyons in (ho district. The water from the melting snow or rains is distributed over nearly 800 acres of rock and sandy land', covered from end to end with sago bushes. This area has been intersected _ by specially constructed ditches with concrete distributing gates, .by means of_ which the water is kept circulating, instead of pouring away to waste.
