POLICE COURT

THURSDAY, AUGUST B (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S-M.) CHARGE WITHDRAWN. A young man appeared on remand charged with being deemed an idle and disorderly person, ~ in that he had no lawful means of support. Sergeant Dunlop asked leave to withdraw the charge, and submitted a report furnished by the gaol surgeon (Dr Evans). The probation officer (Mr F. G. Cummings) also handed in a report. Tho Magistrate perused those, then called th 0 youth’s father before him and said that ho was afraid the parent had not taken an intelligent interest in his son’s case; otherwise he would have obtained information from those who had attended him in the hospital, information which would have convinced him that it was a case for sympathetic treatment and that the youth was pot fit for hard work. His Worship advised the father to have a talk with Dr Evans aqd then shoulder the responsibility of looking after the yoiith, the charge against whom was withdrawn. _ An order was made suppressing publication of accused’s name.

AN UNLUCKY BUMP. John Cossens _ (Mr Irwin) _ pleaded guilty to being in a state of intoxication whilst in charge of a motor car. Ft appeared from the story told by Sergeant Dunlop that accused was proceeding along King Edward street behind a tramcar, when the, latter stopped and accused’s car crashed into the rea.r of it. Constable Garlick happened to be on tho tram; and on investigating matters found Cossens to be in sufficiently intoxicated a state to warrant a charge being laid. Mr Irwin said accused had had some liquor, but was not actually drunk. He had been slightly injured by the crash and the car was badly smashed. Accused was fined £5 and his license suspended for six months. DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, who did not appear, was fined the amount of his bail (20s), in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment.
