AY. by another p amendment, sought to obtain a roferen- j( t dum of the people on the question of | the Bible in schools, and this was lost | by 16 to 13. , . | Tho clause was then adopted unaltored by 16 to 14. jtf On clause 2 the Hon. 0. J. Carnng- | ton moved an amendment in order to | require that instruction be held before | the ordinary school hours. He said his | object was to enable something on the lines of the Nelson system to be applied. In this he was unsuccessful, for, r after the Hon. L. M. Lsitt had declared | that the alteration would nullity the [• whole Pill, the proposal was defeated , by 17 to 13. . . , The Hon. J. A. Hanan introduced an ( amendment to make the Bill apply to native, technical, and secondary schools, i but not to primary ones. A lengthy discussion upon Mr Han- , an's amendment ensued belorc well- J filled galleries. Long speeches by Mr ■ Hanan, Mr Earnshaw, Mr Cohen, and IMr MacGregor were delivered, occupy- f ing two hours, before the division was : reached. Tho amendment was defeated [ by 16 to 12, and 1 k - clause, which i>er- i mits religious exercises within school | hours, was retained by 16 to 11. I, On clause 3 Mr Earnshaw moved to L tho effect that the school hymnal be compiled by representatives of all Chris- f. lian churches, but this was also do- k feated.
Tho remaining clauses of the Bill survived several attempts to amend them, but a new clause was approved requiring the text-books agreed upon for use in the schools to be laid before Parliament.
The' Bill as amended was reported and set down for its third reading next Friday.
