iETROPOLITAH TROTS GOIITEYM WINS PRINCIPAL EASE GREAT BINGEN'S WONDERFUL RUN DAPHNE WILDWOOD DESTROYED, [By St. Clatr.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. Considering the cold, the attendance at Addington for the second day of the August Meeting of tho New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club was good, and for those who put up with tho weather an excellent day’s racing was provided. Southern horses had no luck, and several of them were very costly to their supporters. - Countryman went the best race of his career to win the King George Handicap, and was splendidly handled by his trainer (W. Warren). Tno gem of tho afternoon’s racing, however, was reserved for the final event, when the champion, Great Bingen, who was handicapped on slightly better than 2min 9soc to the mile, got up to heat Brcntloc in the last few r strides, .it was a wonderful run over the last two furlongs, and, though he was the biggest outsider to win during tho day, the public gave him a woudorI ful reception. Poterwall’s win in the Avon HandiI cap was a good one, for ho was forced to cover a lot of extra ground, and at tho finish won comfortably from the I consistent Audobcll. I Tho weather was bitterly cold, hut ! the track was drying up when the field | ivent out for the Improvers’ Handicap, Im of, for unhoppled trotters, - and the Dunedin-owned mare, Happy Rosa, was made a good favorite, but broke at the start. The best backed of the others were Guy Parrish, Lazarus, Young Blake, Lady Fan, and Frisco Beau. Young Blake also broke at tho start, and Tho Toff, Lady Fan, Mount (Royal, and Little Logan (Logan Pointer—Little Doris, driven by H. Gaskell) led in close order for nearly a mile. Then Kola Boy displaced Mount Royal at the far turn. Just over two furlongs from homo Kola Boy took charge from Little Logan, but broke just before reaching the straight, and Little Logan went on to win easily by six lengths from Mount Royal, with Guy Parrish two lengths further back, just in front of Young Carbine, The Toff, and Queen Ida. Doctor Dillon and King Dillon were withdrawn 'from the Dash Handicap, Im, for which Bruce (Logan Pointer— Trixie Mac, ridden by D. Bennett) was made a little better favorite than Maiwhariti, Daphne Wildwood, and St. Maura. The favorite began very smartly, and was just in front of Maiwhariti, Double Event, and Dalmeny passing the stand (two furlongs). Just after this Homer fell, and Daphne Wildwood foil over him, the accident interfering with the chances of several others. Bruce showed the way along the back to Dalmeny and Macaranda, none of the others having a chanco. Dalmeny headed Bruce at the home turn, but in a punishing finish Bruce stayed the better, and beat Dalmeny by a length, Macaranda a head away third, and Double Event fourth. Times: 2rnin ICsec, 2min 17 l-ssec, 2min 17 2-ssec. Totalisator, £5,639. Daphne Wildwood was badly injured, and G, Caddy, the rider of Homer, was removed to the hospital in an unconscious condition, but it was afterwards reported that his injuries were not serious. Daphne Wildwood was so badly injured that he had to be shot. Ail started in the King George Handicap, 2m, and in a good betting race Delaran’s Quest finished up a slightly better favorite than Downcast, with the bracketed pair, Countryman (Logan Pointer-—Country Belle, driven by W. Warren) and Glenelg, and Talaro the best backed of the othem, Roicole dwelt a little at the start, all the others going away well. Downcast led Countryman, Harbor Light, and Delavan’s Quest over the first half-mile, and at the end of ten furlongs the order entering the last lap was Loganwood, Downcast, Countryman, Talent, and Dreamalion, the field being well bunched. Roicolo went round the field going into the back stretch, and Glenelg headed Loganwood with half- a mile to go. At the far turn the order was Glenelg, Roicolo, Loganwood, and Countryman. All closed up turning for the homo run, where Countryman, Roicole, Talaro, and Man o’ War were almost in line. Then Talaro challenged Countryman, and the pair drew right away from the others. In an exciting finish Countryman prevailed by a head, with Man o’ War eight lengths away third, followed by Rmcole, Talent, and Loganwood. Times: 4min 34 3-sscc, 4min 32 4-ssec, 4m in 31 4-ssec. Totalisator, £6,3565. Only Daphne Wildwood was withdrawn from the Belgium Handicap, 2m, for which Tom Thumb (Logan Pointer; — Flossie Dillon, driven by J. W. Frizzell) was sent out a slightly better favorite than the Southlander Moor Chimes, with Uncle Bert and Wairua the best backed of the others. Wairua led out from Uncle Bert, William the Great, and Rapier. This order was not changed until going into the last circuit, when Uncle Bert headed Wairua and the pair led William the Groat, Pinovale, and Moor Chimes. The latter appeared not to be able to handle the turns well. At the far turn William the Great was in charge, and in dose order had Wairua, Tom Thumb (who had covered a lot of extra ground), and Lady Embrace next. Once in the straight Tom Thumb put in his claim and won comfortably by two lengths from William the Great, with Lady Embrace three lengths off third, followed by Wairua, Blue Star, and Uncle Bert, Times: 4min 41 1-5 sec, 4min 43 4-ssec, 4min 41 4-ssec. Totalisator. £5,7695. Only Holly Boy was withdrawn from the Lincoln Handicap, Ifm, for which the Southland horse Harold Thorpe was made a much better favorite than Yenot, with Silk Thread and Billy Whizz the next best favored. Vera’s Doll led out, bat after going half a mile Macanda led Vera’s Doll and King Abdullah into the last lap. Going to the far turn Pearl Coronado (Van Coronado—Cast Pearl, driven by nor owner, Roy Berry) made a forward move and two furlongs from home was in charge, with Billy Whizz next. Pearl Coronado went on to win easily by two lengths from Granite City, who just beat Billy Whizz for second money, Harold Thorpe, Pan Yan, and Macanda next. Times: 2min 52sec, 2niin 51 l-ssec, 2min 52 2-ssec. Totalisator, £6,504. As the field was running__tbe last lap Honor Bright fell, and Nipper fell over him. The accident interfered with several of tho back-markers, who weie going well at the time. For the Avon Handicap, 2m, for imhoppled trotters, Bonny Spec was v ithdrawn. and tho American-bred Peter Wah (Etawa —Janova, driven by R. G. Fisken) was sent out the hottest favorite of the meeting, with the bracketed pair Young Blake and .Peter M'Kinney, Mangoutu, and Audobell the best backed of the others. Tho favorite went out very smartly and was -nth the leaders, Koraki, Audobell, and Young Blake,, after going half a mile,

and though ho covered a lot of extra ground Peter Wah was always in the leading line/ With five furlongs tq, go he shot to the front and led Young Blake, Audobell, and Red , Oak round the far turn. Young Blake broke two furlongs from home, and Peter Wah stayed on to beat Audobell by two lengths, with Red Oak half a length off third. Mangoutu was a long way back fourth. Times; 4min 37 4-ssec,. 4min 42 l-ssec, 4min 36 2-6 sec, Totalisator, £6,364*. , Sea Pearl was sent out a very hot favorite in the Canterbury. Handicap, 2m, Taurekareka also being heavily backed, while Doctor Dillon, Silk Thread, and Peter Bingen (Nelson Bingen—Bertha Bello, driven by Kennerley) were the next in demand. Taurekareka dwelt a little at the start and Bing Boy lost all chance. Lenamhor led Peter Bingen for nine furlong 5. Thes the latter went out by himself, and staying on just lasted long enough to beat Doctor Dillon, who finished very fast, by half a length, with Silk Thread a length off third, Golden Devon and Lenamhor next. The Speedway Handicap, Urn. produced a good betting race as well as a high-class field. The ox-Southlander Bell Harold was selected a better favorite than Waitaki Girl and Brentloc, with the bracketed pair Main Voyager and Logan Chief and Away next, in demand. Waitaki Girl and Logan Chief were slow to move off, and Brentloc, on the limit, at once went to the front and led Main Voyage, Becky Logan, and Bonny Logan into the List lap. Going along the back Brentloc still remained in charge just in front of a bunch, with Prince Pointer and Willie Logan at his wheel and just in front of a bunched field. Brentloc led Prince Pointer and Willie Logan into the straight, when Great Bingen (Nelson Bingen—Bertha Bell, driven b/ D. Withers) came very fast round about six horses and wide on the outside Then he commenced a wonderful ran and just got up in time to. heat brentloc by half a length. Prince . Pouter was only a nock away third, with Ahuriri, Bonny Logan, and BlacK Admiral all close up The winner received a great ovation on returning to the enclosure.
