The mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.) will reach Dunedin, on July 10 from Wellington, and will remain hero a few days. Mr J. B. Shaddock left this morning on a private business trip to Wellington. . Bro. Hickey, who has been in Now Zealand in connection with the Catholic College to be opened at Oainaru, left to-day on his return to Sydney, taking with him three boys, who are to enter the novitiate at the Christian Brothers School, Strathfiold. 5 Mr Jack Hudson was a passenger by the north express to-day, cn route for Australia on holiday. Mr J. Ramsdon went to Christchurch this morning on a business trip. Messrs P. Topliss, G. Topliss. and T. Topliss, directors of the Waitaki Dairy Company, went north this morning, the latter bound for Greymouih and the two former for Christchurch. Mr W. Black and Mr A. P. Aldridge wore passengers by the express to-day ixhind for Wellington. A presentation of a ca,se of cutlery and a gold-mounted pipe was made to Mr Alexander Black, examiner of accounts for the City Council, at a, gathering of the members of the staff last evening. Mr Black is retiring on superannuation after twenty years’ services. The presentation was made by Mr H. H. Henderson, city treasurer, in the unavoidable absence of the town clerk (Mr G. A. Lewin). Mr Black will be succeeded by Mr J. M’Narey. _ At Government House yesterday His Excellency the Governor-General (Sir Charles Porgusson) formally presented Letters Patent of Knighthood to the Hon. Sir John Hosking, upon whom His Majesty was graciously pleased to confer the honor of Knight Bachelor last year (reports a Wellington Press Association message). Those present included _ the Chief r Justice (tho Hon. Mr Justice Skerrett) and a number of judges of the Supreme Court. At tho City Council last evening Cr J. F. Arnold, of the Timaru Borough Council, was welcomed by the deputymayor (Mr W. B. Taverner). Mr Taverner referred to the fact that Mr Arnold had represented Dunedin in the House of Representatives some years ago. Mr Arnold, in reply, said that his heart was still in Dunedin, and ho hoped tho time would come when ho would he able to live hero again. Mr Cam Pratt, manager for E. J. Carroll Celebrity Tours, arrived last night to arrange for the appearance hero of tho Don Cossacks, the Russian Choir of thirty-six voices. Ho is staying at Wain’s Hotel, Dr J. C. Bradshaw, organist of Christchurch Cathedral, arrived this afternoon. He will give the opening recital on the new organ in the Anderson’s Bay Prcsbtyerian Church tomorrow evening, and return home on Saturday. The annual report of the Otago Education Board states that during the year the following ten teachers, after long, faithful, and efficient service, retired on superannuation :—Marjory T. Scott, assistant, Forbury; Alice G. Bowling, assistant, North-east Valley; Isabella 0. Cooper, infant mistress, High Street; Alice M. Andrew, infant mistress, North-east Valley; Clara E. Chalmer, infant mistress, Musselburgh; Henry L. Darton, assistant, Lawrence; James H. Gray, assistant, Port Chalmers; Edgar H. Burn, head teacher, Romahapa; John A. Robertson, assistant, High street; James Borthwick, assistant, Forbury. “ We, regret very much to record the death of our colleague, Mr Nicholson,” state the inspectors of the Otago education district in their annual report to the Minister. “As an inspector he was earnest, industrious, and efficient, and the breakdown in his health was partly duo to his intense devotion to his work. Ho was a keen student of educational aims and methods, and we miss him very much not only as a _ colleague whose co-operation in carrying on tho work of the district was of great value, hut also as an educationalist taking part in our conferences one whoso opinion on_ the problems we try to solve was held in high esteem by us all.”
