WHAT WAS THE SPHINX?
—■ - •» The Greeks frequently used the figure of a. Sphinx (a woman with wings, and the body of a lion) as a decoration for architecture, much as the British use the figure of a lion. The ancient Egyptians were also fond of placing gigantic figures or statues of a Sphinx, one on each side of the door to a, temple. Their Sphinx was different from that of the Greeks, having a human head, man or woman, without wings, and with a lion’s body, hut always in the posture of lying down. The largest Sphinx is near the pyramids of Gi/.eh, in Egypt.
