Tho Minister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright) paid visits this morning to the recently-opened Children’s Convalescent Home at Kew and to the Caversham Industrial School. He then left by tho express for tho north, accompanied by his daughter. Other members of Parliament who travelled by tho same train were the Hon. M. Cohen, the Hon. C. E. Statham, and Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P. Mr W. Maclean journeyed to Christchurch from Dunedin by the 11.30 train to-day. Mr J. Caughley, Director of Education, left Dunedin this morning by tho second express for Wellington. Mr G. A. Nelson left for Auckland this morning to attend a meeting of tho Sports Federation. Mr R. J. Haddon, who represented an Australian exhibitor at tho Exhibition, left for Auckland by to-day’s express, en route for his home in_ Sydney. The news room staff of this paper gathered round the, stone at the call of time yesterday to make presentations to Mr H. Smeaton, who has accepted a position with our morning contemporary. Mr Stanley Smith, manager of the company, said that Mr Smeaton had served the firm faithfully for over ten years, and tho gift (a clock) was a mark of tho esteem in which ho was held by his fellowemployees. Tho printer and father of tho chapel also spoke of the good qualities of Mr Smeaton, who made a characteristic reply. Dr R. B. Phillipps, school medical officer, Christchurch, returned north by to-day’s express. Mr Leonard J. M. Hooper, general manager of Messrs R. G. Dun and Co. for Australia and New Zealand, went north this morning, en route for Melbourne. The town elerg (Mr G. A. Lowin) has been appointed tho City Council’s representative on the Transport Appeal Board. Staying at the Hotel Carlton are Mr G. P, Sperryman (Birmingham, England), Mr F. C. Fraser ’ (Dereham, England), Messrs H. J. Jews on and H. Hamnon (Auckland), Mr W. O. Sylol (Queenstown), Mr J. Dunlop (Gore). Among those at the Excelsior Hotel are Mr T. Gaffney (Melbourne), MrS. R. Blatter (Fcilding), Mr and Mrs AJ. Williamson (Gisborne). Mrs Ruiclon (Woodbury), Sir and Mrs Nathan (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Thos. Quick and Mr G. A. Johnston (Christchurch), Mr H. J. Gnihli (Tinmrn), Mr D. M'Lcod ,Arrnwtown), Mr J. E. Coombs (Invercargill). Guests at the City Hotel include Messrs F. Morrison, E. Kecloy, and Mrs Hopkins Wilson (Auckland), Mr G. Hayley (Christchurch), Mr J. Wilson (Timaru).
