The Hon. R. A. Wright (Minister of Education), accompanied by Mr J. Caughley (Director of Education), arrived in Dunedin yesterday evening. Mr Wright and his party, who are staying at the Grand Hotel, attended a farewoll function tendered to Mr S. M. rare last night. This morning the Minuter received three deputations, after whioh ho attended a luncheon at the University Club, and then performed the opening ceremony in connection with the new Dental School of the Otago University. He will leave for the north by to-morrow’s express. ~ „ , The mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, M.P.■) leaves for Wellington to-morrow to attend the forthcoming session of Jtarliament. , . , A Wellington Press Association telegram states that at a large gathering of members of the New Zealand Marine and Engineers' Institute the emblem ox life membership was bestowed upon the Hon. W. Earnshaw, M.L.C. A presentation was also made to Mr Arnold Lovestam, who is about to retire after a lengthy and distinguished career ot marine enginfeering. A presentation was mad© at leton© last night to Mr R. A. -Armstrong, president of the Wellington Trotting Club, and socretarv of the Moderate League. Mr M. A, Carr presided oyer a large and representative gathering, which included Mr George Baildon (Mayor ot Auckland) and other public men. The chairman, in presenting Mr Armstrong with a motor car and a grandfather clock, eulogised the services he had rendered to sport and the community generally.—Wellington Press Association telegram. Signor Squarise, who, twenty-one years ago, founded the Dunedin Philharmonic Society, was presented with a case of pipes at the annual meeting last night. Mr J. Himburg, who made the presentation, referred to the fir® work Signor Squarise had done for tho society, . His Honor Mr Justice Alpers recently entered a private hospital in _ Wellington, and has undergone a surgical operation. It will probably be between two and three months before ho resumes his seat on the bench. Dr and Mrs Howard Taylor, famous in missionary circles, intend revisiting New Zealand, for three or four months, in February of next year. They wilt begin lecturing in this province. Dr Taylor is tho son of tho founder of tho China Inland Mission, the late Rev. Dr .1. Hudson Taylor, M.R.C.S., F.R.G.S., and his partner in life is _tho gifted authoress who before marriage was known as Miss Geraldino Guineas. Mrs D. L. M'Diarmid has been appointed records librarian at the Dunedin Hospital. Matron Neil, of th© now Palmerstou Hospital, took up her duties 3 T esterclay.
