THE HANAFIN CASE
“ INDECENT DOCUMENTS " POSTED MAGISTRATE DISMISSES INFORMATION ' [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 31. In his reserved judgment this morning, the magistrate, Air Widdowion, S.xvL, dismissed the charge against George Hanafin, a chemist, of sending an indecent document through the post. “It seems peculiar,” said the magistrate, “that defendant should be charged with sending such documents while newspapers insert advertisements that deal with practically the same thing—birth control and surgical goods.” The Magistrate, continuing, said it appeared to him that there hod been an evolution in public and judicial opinion in those matters, and since the war opinions had been further advanced. These documents had beau sent through the post by defendant on request, and there was no indiscriminate broadcasting. _ Earlier in his judgment the magistrate had hold that ono of the documents was not objectionable, but the other three were indecent.
