SOCCER

POSITION OF TEAMS.

TECHNICAL OLD BOYS v. HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS.

The defeat© inflicted on High School Old Boys by Technical College Old Boys at "Culling Park was not altogether a surprise to those who have been following Soccer this season. It was an encounter between the two best-trained teams in the competition. Technical Old Boys particularly have been training hard. The School team is not up to the mark of the eleven fielded last season, three or four good players having been lost. Bearing those considerations in mind, a result either way would bavo occasioned no surprise. The game was fast and even, and the Technical team was rather lucky at times in fending off attacks; but no one can say that the win was not deserved.

In the first half the game was fairly even, High School- having rather the better ol the exchanges. Play was fast and changeful. Holden, in goal for Technical, had to save two or three times, and Gaskie at tho other end had also to coino to light, particularly when on ono occasion he had a misunderstanding with Gould. The ball wont over that time, and a dangerous position passed without result. The backs of both sides were playing well. Chapman and Barr, for High School, and Morrow and one nr two on the other side, wore prominent. High School Old Boys assumed, a greater superiority ns the spell drew to its close. Tho forwards attacked strongly, and Douglas centred, Holden saving splendidly a snappy shot from Brown. He throw the hall over, giving a corner, from which nothing resulted. High School had just been pulled up for off-side when the whistle went. Half-time: No score.

Tho second spell had hardly commenced before Tech, attacked, and the ball was; sent in from tho right, and, coming out, Gaskie just got his hands on it. Batchelor’s foot was ready, and he tapped it through, amid hearty applause. plauso. Technical Old Boys 1, High School Old Boys 0. Tech, continued the attack for a while, and Gaskie saver! again. Then the School effected a. clearance, and pressed, the raid ending when Douglas was penalised for “ bauds." Tech, returned, and M‘Donald got into a good scoring position, hut his shot wont over, The scene of action shifted with speed to the other end, where Holden stopped a shot from Dougins. Later a corner kick came, and the Tech, goal was in danger, hut the raid failed. Old Boys kept up the pressure, and Duncan .sent in a couple of shots, both of which lacked sting. Holden wont down in clearing the second of these, and Brown dashing in took the leather into goal. Technical Old Hoys 1, High School Old Boys 1. Tho School goal was soon in jeopardy. A Technical forward missed a good chance with a header, and soon after, when Gaskie was well beaten, a fast cross-ball struck the bar upright and glanced out. The School forwards were soon hack, but the play as quickly changed again, for the Technical vanguard advanced on the left, and a dangerous dropping ball was headed away by one of the defenders. A few moments afterwards Witchall, receiving from a corner, got into a good position, and found the not with a fine drive.

The School forwards came bark, mid following play between Latimer and Duncan a shot by the latter missed narrowly. The goalie saved another soon afterwards. Cnskio stopped one at the other end. Then the Srhool team attacked again. Holden saved more than once, and finaTly tho defenders cleared lucikly when the position was extremely dangerous. High School had a free kirk i'or obstruction of Chapman hy Hector, but it brought no result. Caski© ended a Technical raid by giving the ball a tremendous roost that sent it sky-Meli over the fence. The School team attacked again, and forced their way rigid, to the goal-month, hut luck again was against them. Caski© stopped me at the other end, and his fu wards again advanced. Patrick rent in a good, though unsuccessful, snot. Gn.ld and Batchelor went down the line together, and the Technical man played the man instead of the ha il. /. he re was surprise when the referee (Mr Ghent) gave a kirk against High School Old Boys for it. The final score was:— Technical College Old Boys 2 High School Old Boys ... 1

MORNINGTON v. T.M.C.A. Playing on the Mornington Ground, Y.M.C.A. were defeated by Mornington by 1 goal to 0. It was not a brilliant game, but upon occasions the forwards of both teams gave exhibitions of good football. The Y.M.C.A. goalkeeper was given a number of chances, and several times ho made good saves. At the beginning play _ was very rough. After about ten minutes play Mornington started a series of rushes, and from one of these Walker got away and passed to Lee, on the right wing, the latter giving the goalie no chance. Mornington 1, Y.M.C.A. 0. The Rods quickly had the ball at the other end of the field, but Mornington were on the defensive. Mornington’s forwards, however, carried play back to the Y.M.CJL area, and Wills, in goal, put in some smart work. When within 30yds of the goal Shirwood (Mornington) mad© a wild shot which went wide. A scramble then ensued in front of the goal mouth, but no soore was registered. The Reds then started a loose rush which broke down at midfield. The Mornington hacks at this stage were defending well. When halftime was called the score was unaltered.

A scramble in front of the Reds’ goal soon after the commencement of the second half kept Wills busy. From halfway the ball was taken back to the goals, and Shirwood’s shot went to the goalie’s hands. A struggle then started before the net, and Wills bad plenty to do. Eventually the ball ra cleared to midfield, and a fair exhibition of Soccer was witnessed before Watkins got away and led Mornington down the field. He made a good attempt to score, but Wills was again on the alert, and fielded the hall. Mornington started pressing, but the opposing backs proved ton strong, and all efforts to score were frustrated. Just before the whistle Mornington started a. rush, and Watkins made an unsuccessful attempt to incraso the score. The whistle blew shortly afterwards, with the final score standing at: Mornington ... „. ... ... 1 T.M.C.A ... 0 Mr Preston refereed. MAORI HILL v. NORTHERN. Maori Hill beat Northern at Prospect Park by 5 goals to 1. Maori Hill kicked off against the wind. The first incident, of note occurred when Ralk, the homo side’s left winger, beat J. Dryden and another opponent and took the hall bock and across the goal 15yds out, to drive the leather a trifle high over the bar. The Red and Golds’ in.sido left (Case) co-operated wonderfully with Balk, and the two- made the best of their opportunities. The play was even. A few minutes after the first incident J. Dryden shot, but the leather was headed just over the bar. A throw-in resulted in the first score, and the only one of the first half. Balk obtained and transferred to Jones, the able centre forward of the home eleven, and the latter netted. Shortly after resumption Balk, from two yards off Northern’s line, centred to the goal month, and Jones headed the ball in, making the score Maori Hill 2, Northern 0. The losing side staved off more dangjorous attacks; then the situation was relieved, and the hill’s goalie (Newell) had to save several times. The Red and Golds pressed assiduously, and Balk scored the third goal with a long shot. Next J. Dryden took a penalty for Northern from about 10yds out. The home goalie fisted it to the bar, and on the rebound Duncan (Northern’s right winger) kicked, but widely. Balk scored again. Oliver (Maori Hill’s inside right) registered the fifth goal. MTavish (centre forward for Northern) then goalcd with a fast ball. Final;—. Maori Hill ... ... o Northern ... '... 1 Mr F. 6. Smith refereed. SEACL3FF v. MOSGTEL.
