INDIAN ARMY HOCKEY MATCH.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —T notice in the last report of the Otago Rugby Union that this body could not see its way to accede to the request of the Otago' Hockey Association to have its matches put off on the occasion of the representative . match ; India v. Otago. The Rugby Union has kindly granted tho use of Carisbrook, but on such an important occasion surely it could have put its matches oil for one Saturday. This is an Imperial matter, as’ the Indian Government has made , a largo grant towards the expenses of this team, and tho Netv. Zealand Hockey Association i is to be commended on its enterprise in inviting this tram, at a large ex- , pense to the association also. ' Hockey is a self-supporting sport, j and as 'a charge is only made when big fixtures are arranged, I think it only fair to the Hockey Association ' that kindred bodies should help by putting off their engagements on this memorable occasion. The Canterbury Rugby union is putting off its fixtures for two consecutive Saturdays, ■ which undoubtedly show's its respect tow'avds the sister sport. The Otago Hockey Association has always put off its fixtures on the occasion of internation Rugby and Soccer matches, and 1 think tile Rugby Union and Otago "Football Association should show them-. selves “ sports ” by their reciprocation. The Indian players are tho finest ex- j ponents of hockey in the world, and 11 feel sure that quite a large number of I I Rugby, Soccer, and League players I would like to see hockey as it should! be played. j Trusting the Rugby Union will re-1 consider its decision, and thus assist
the Hockey Association in making this match a financial success—l am, etc., Obcak R. Cooper. May 29. '
