ISLAND OF PINEAPPLES

The development of an entire island by a single company for’ (he purpose of increasing the production ot pineapples was seen by Honolulu business men recently, when an excursion numbering 150 made a week-end trip to the island ot Lanai as guests of the Hawaiian i’incapple Company. Lanai, up until a few years ago, was considered little more than a barren island and unproductive, save for its value as a sheep and cattle range. To-day it is the location of one of the largest singlebusiness ventures under tHo American (lag. The Pineapple Company bought it a short time ago. has made many improvements, and now 20.000 acres are available for the production of pineapples. Including the price paid for the island the company lias spent 3,100,000 dollars in tho venture. Improvements include the [construction of a harbor and dock, from which a modern macadamised road loads up the face of a cliff to the fertile plains of the upland. An actual and entirely new town, which includes, besides employees' residences, an auditorium and “movie" theatre, tennis courts. and swimming pool, stores, churches, garage, and schools, has also been established by the company, and is known as Lanai City. From the “city” the entire island is “ governed ” by the foreman in charge of the project.
