MINERS' DISEASES

MEDICAL EVIDENCE. Pr»« A«*ociation~By Telegraph—Copyright Australian and J 5.25. Press Association. vSYDNEY. March Id, (Received March 13, ai 11 a.m.) Giving evidence on occupational diseases before the Royal Commission on the safe working, ventilation, and lighting in coal mines in New South Wales, Dr Allen, of Newcastle, said that for some years he had had many cases of nystagmus under his care. It was an occupational disease of the nervous system, and confined to workers in coal mines. Anyone who examined the conditions under which the miners worked could not help coming to one conclusion—-viz., that defective illumination was the sole cause of the disease. The oil safety lamp was far behind others in illumination power. The naked light was easily the best, and in naked light mines practically no nystagmus existed. The disease, ho considered, was not incurable.
