MOSGIEL NOTES

[Feom Ode Correspondent.] The annual meeting of the Taierf branch of the Otago Expansion League, hold on Monday evening last, was presided over by Mr Thomas Miller, tho retiring president; and although the attendance was numer , M y disappointing, the shortage in n * .or was more than compensated for ny enthusiasm and interest in the proceedings by those present. In moving the adoption of the balance-sheet (which showed a credit balance of over £10) and the annual report Mr Millet stated that it was singular that with a membership of nearly 100 there were not more present, but he paid a high tribute to the outgoing committee, whose year’s work had been beneficial to the whole district. He stated that the league had never been afraid to come out in the open in advocacy of anything that in its opinion was for the welfare of the borough, and in this respect instanced the league’s attitude in respect of tho borough’s purchase of the Church Board’s land. Personally, he felt that a mistake had been made in tne ratepayers turning clown the proposition; but as the land had now passed out of the hands of the Church Board and was on the evo of being onb up tho league felt it had attained the end that it had boon fighting for for several years, and was therefore quite satisfied'. Among other matters of interest that the league bad taken an active part in were tho installation of the slot telephone and stamping machine; a public meeting in respect to swimming baths; assistance to the School Committee in the purchase of a delineascope; tho numbering of ail houses in the borough; in addition to being represented at the two deputations to members of the government in connection with improved railway facilities for the borough. Personally, ho said, he was disappointed at the apparent apathy of a large percentage of their members; yet on the other band there was tho record of their year’s work, which in his opinion spoke for itself. Messrs Henderson, Frew, Crawford, Rutherford, and Bacon all supported the chairman’s remarks, Mr Frew in particular stating that the trading community, which had everything to gain from the league, merely stood by and criticised all that was being done. In respect to the sparse attendance at their meetings, lie stated that the lodges were m exactly the same condition, being run month after month by the same old half-dozen, whilst the remaining members merely participated in the benefit# to bo derived. On a ballot being taken tho following officers were elected for the ensuing year ■ President,’ Mr Thomas Miller ; 'vice-president, Mr R. F. Dens-em-committee—Messrs Bacon, Rutherford T. AVilliaras, Gibson, Frew, and Henderson; secretary and treasurer, M> J. F. Crawford, who was granted s honorarium of £lO per annum The question of the closing up o) a portion of the roadline ot Church street was discussed, and it was decided to write to the Borough Council urging it to obtain a declaratory judgment from the Supremo Court m respect to this matter. EAST TAIERI SCHOOL PICNIC. Favored with delightful weather, the annual picnic of the children attending the school on Monday last was a most successful event. The children were taken bv train to Titri, and thence by boat. to Taieri Mouth, whore the committee and teaching staff bad made every arrangement for tne children t comfort. One ami all spent a most enjoyable day.

MOSGIEL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB. The annual meeting, held in the Coronation Hall on Tuesday evening, was well attended by Soccer enthusiasts. The balance-sheet _ showed the club to be in a flourishing financial position, and all present spoke hopefully of the club’s chances during the lorthcoming season. The opinion was Iromy expressed that there was every chance of the importation of new blood into the team. The following officers were appointed:—Patron, the mayor (Mr J. P, Walls); president, Air W. M‘lntosh ; vice-presidents—Messrs Brown, Saxhy, H. W. M'Lean, Wallace, D. P. Wilson, Frew, Swailes, T. M'Lellan, and Dr Spedding; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. F. The president (Mr William Allan) conducted the meeting in his usual breezy manner, and in welcoming all old and now players for the forthcoming season congratulated the club on last year s efforts, which, although not placing them high upon the list, were a meritorious performance. He stated that the club’s finances were in a healthy state, the credit for which was due entirely to the secretary (Mr G. Hendry), and that the thanks of the club were due to the O.R.F.U. for having sent the pick of the teams out to Mosgiel. Air Allan remarked upon the fact that the better the team sent from town the better their club seemed to play, instancing the sterling performances against University A and Pirates. A certain amount of misunderstanding appeared to exist among some of the members in respect to the rent being charged by the Borough Council for the ground, hnt when it was explained that a reduction of £7 had been made this year, and also that during the last season the council had spent £3 for every £1 received upon the ground in improving it, the misunderstanding would be removed, and the council voted not as black as painted. The following office-bearers were elected for the year:—President, Afr William Allan; vice-presidents—Messrs (I C. APLachlan, W. AFLood, W. Knott, A. Patterson, J. W. Pearce; secretary, Mr George Hendry ; committee—Messrs G. Grieve, W. W. Turnbull, H. Miller, H. Kirk, A. H. Scott; delegates "lo O.R.F.U.—Messrs M'Laron, Kirk, and Grieve; delegate to O.R.F.U. accident fund, Mr William Allan; chib captain, Mr G. Grieve. Practice is lo commence on Saturday, March 20, and_.it Easter the annual fixture against Kaitangata will take place. SUBDIVISION. It has always been realised that the subdivision of the Church Board land would ultimately be the moans ol sending the borough ahead, but those who were most sanguine hardly dared to hope that that time was as near ns it apparently is. During the past week n. progressive firm of Dunedin contractors has purchased land in the borough for the purpose of erecting workshops and offices. It is their intention to proceed straight away with the erection ol at least twenty modern cottages.
