PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of tho Plunket Society was held yesterday; present— Mesdamcs Johnston the chair), Theomin, Moor Jos. Macgeorge,' Cieghorn, Sidcy, Brown, Gunninghanio, Williams, Herbert, Watson, Galiaway, tiarr, J. U. Macgeorge, and hrascr. Before tho business commenced the members stood in silence as a tribute of respect to the memory of the Jato Mrs Jackson, who had for many years been a member of the committee. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Clapperton and O’Neill and Sister Nora. A number of gifts and subscriptions wore gratefully acknowledged. A progress report of work in connection with the new building at the ivari-tano-Harris Hospital from Messrs Maude no and Fraser (architects) was read. Arrangements were made lor providing Christmas dinner at tho KaritaneHarris Hospital, as usual. The Matron of the Karitane-Harris Hospital reported for the month ol November: —-Number of patients on October 31—-mothers 3, babies 19; admitted during tho month—mothers 11, babies 19; discharged during tho monthmothers 12, babies 19; number on November 30—mothers 2, babies 19; largest number on any one day.—mothers 3, babies 20. One very small premature baby was admitted in a critical condition, and died a few hours after admission.

Sources of admission: One mother and baby from Waikouaiti, one mother and baby from Abbotsford, one mother and baby from Ranfurly, one mother and baby from Ivaitangala, one mother and baliy from Hyde, one baby from Wyudham, one from Mataura, one from Waimate, one from Balclntba. The remaining mothers and babies were admitted from Dunedin and suburbs.

Nursing Staff.—There are seventeen Blanket trainees. Nurses _ Barnett, Twentyman, Burke, and Morrison have finished their training, and Nurse Hooker has begun hers. _ There are eleven Karitano nurses in training. Nurse Crompton Smith has finished her training, and Nurse Horn has begun. Examinations.—The examination for the Plunket trainees was held on November 27, Drs Williams and Ritchie conducting the oral tests. Visitors.—Tho number of visitors during (ho month was 163. On November 24 Her Excellency Lady Alice Fergnsson, accompanied by Miss Orr-Ewing and Captain Wentworth, visitegl the hospital, and was entertained by tho committee after they had inspected the institution. Drs Roberta Jull, Vera Scantlcbury, and Henrietta Main have visited tho hospital frequently to gain a knowledge of the methods carried out Gifts,—Gifts have been received from the following:—Mrs J. A. Johnstone, Mrs Theomin, Mrs Galiaway. Tho nurses for tho north and central distrets reported:—Babies on the lists 891, breast-fed babies 262, pnrtiallv breast-fed 100, now cases for tho month (babies onlv) 37. breast-fed 18, partially breast-fed G, new cases (expectant mothers) 5, visits to homos GIG. Visits to central rooms: Adults 16/, babies 163. Visits to Boslyn rooms; Adults 52, babies 54. Mothers shown how to prepare humanised milk in thenown homes 11. Bottles of humanised milk sent from the dairy 5,917. Ihe general health of the babies is good. Tho nurse for tho South Dunedin district reported:—Babies on list J<B, now cases for month (babies only) 18, new cases for month (expectant mothers) 3, breast-fed babies 78, partially hreast-fed 38. visits to homos 350, visits to rooms (adults) 158, visits to rooms (babies) 146. Tho ouUtations nurse reported:— Cases on list 252. breast-fed babies 40, partially breast-fed 46, new oases for month 20. Visits to _ homes, Anderson’s Bay 90, Mosgiol 11, Abbotsford, Green Island, and Burnside 18, Ravensbourne 38. Visits to central rooms from Anderson’s Bay district;— adults 9G, babies 93 Visits to Plnnket rooms. Mosgicl—adults 33, babies 33. Visits to Plunket moms. Port Chalmers—adults 17, babies 16. The following places wore visited during the month;—Mosgiol 3 visits, Port Chalmers 3, Abbotsford 3, Green Island 4, Burnside 2, Ravensbourne 4. Six mothers were shown how lo prepare humanised milk.
