The weather was threatening and overcast for the opening day of the Gore Spring Meeting, but 'remained fine. The course was in splendid order, and the times recorded wore all fast. The attendance was very large, £928 being taken at the gates, as compared with £763 on the corresponding day last year. The totalisator returns totalled £23,0545, and were £lB5 larger than last year, and would have been better still but for the money invested on the first race being hold up until the fourth race pending the result of an inquiry. Mr M'Tvor’s starting was good. Ravenna won the cup so well under 8.10 that her New Zealand Cup chances must bave > improved. Margaret Birney, who is engaged in the New Zealand Oaks, won nicely, and was staying on at the right end to give her a chance in that classic event. Corn Money unseated his, rider at the commencement of his preliminary, and galloped half a mile before being caught; but this did not prevent him being made a good favorite in the Pukerau Hack, 6f. with John Bradbury and Gieseler’s other candidate, Receipt, next in demand. From a good lino a!! got away well excepting Glenboa and Sweet Melody. Corn ‘Money and Divininl in line were dear after going a furlong. Sweet Melody led this pair into the straight, where' Miss Winkie (Winkie —Whiplash, 111 b over, ridden by H. Anderton) and Receipt came wide on the outside, and Queen Balboa on the rails. Miss Winkie clapped Receipt out just as they turned into the straight, and with Quean Bat-

boa headed Sweet Melody, Corn Money, Divinial having dropped out. Inside tho distance post Miss .Winkie caiight Queen Balboa, and running away from the whip crossed over on to the rails and beat her by a length. Bran Pie, who finished very fast, was a length away third, just in front of Bilboa and Vogue. Time, Imin 16sec. Totalisator investments, £2,5845. An inquiry was hold after the race, ami H. Anderton was suspended for the remainder of the day for crossing Corn Money, Divinial, and Receipt in the straight. Stella Harris, with Avalsh in the sulky, was made a better favorite than Quick March in tho Mataura Harness Trot, 2m, with Cole Hill and Rollicking Bells (Four Chimes —The Kink, ridden by AV. Jones) next in demand. The favorite lost several lengths at the start, and Freelance refused to strike a gait. Kerrwood Bells led Stella Harris and Rollicking Bells for a half a mile. Then the favorite wont to the front and showed the way to Kerrwood Bells and Rollicking Bells, this trio being well dear from Quickmatch, who was at tho head of a hunch. This order was not changed till three furlongs from home, where Rollicking Bolls took charge, and led Kerrwood Bells and Stella Mams to tho approach to the home turn, where Quickmatch joined Kerrwood Bell. In the run to the post Rollicking Bells drew away to win easily by six lengths from the straight-out trotter, with Quickmatch two lengths away third, followed by Stella Harris, Joy Chimes, and Bonanza. Times, 4min 57sec, smin 2scc, 4min 58seo, smin 2 l-ssoc. Totalisator inevstraents. £2,3375. It was bad luck for the club that Heather Lad and Bonena should have boon withdrawn from tho Gore Cup, Ifni, leaving only four to go to the post. Ravenna (Solferino—Droski, ridden by A. B. Ellis) was _ always favorite, carrying more than Listening Post, who had the services of A. S. Ellis, who was still feeling the effects sustained at the Riverton Meeting last week, when Dick Travis f?ll with him. Kill'ane looked lighter than when racing at Oamaru ton days ago. _ Listening Post, on the rails, was showing just in front of Salerno for the first seven furlongs, Ravenna running- in behind on the rails. Then the favorite moved up, and Salerno immediately dropped back. Listening Post was still full of runniim when heads were turned for home, but at the distance post Ravenna readied him and beat him home by a length. Kilfane was three lengths further back. Time, 2min 7soc. Totalisator investments, £2,1475. Had Arthur Ellis been able to help Listening Post at tho finish the result might have been closer. Tho Waimca Hack Handicap, n, produced another good field, and Taboo was made tho elect, with Boughleen Dhoun and Hungry Hill also well backed, with Margaret Birney (Adjudge—Rosa Chamberlain), ridden by AV. Cooper, next in demand. After two breakaways a ragged start was effected, Soldier’s Hope, Navy Cut, and Taboo being the best out, and Boughleen Dhoun and Hnnry Hill last. Tho three first named carried on the running to the far turn, where Margaret Birney tried to got through on the rails. Navy Cut was done with three furlongs from home, and Taboo dropped out before reaching the straight. Soldier’s Hope led Margaret Birney into the homo run, but before reaching the distance post the latter was in charge, and went on to win by over two lengths from Boughleen Dhoun, who finished a head in front of Cornflower, AVarsoer, Soldier’s Hope, and Taboo next. Time, Imin 29 l-sscc. Totalisator investments, £2,9405. Boughleen Dhoun was running last four furlongs from home, and finished very fast over the last three furlongs. Hushabye was backed for the Labor Day Saddle Trot, lsm, as if the race were all over, Bcrma Pointer being the only other starter solidly supported. Bcrma Pointer and St. Thomas (Dragoon—Heraerotta), ridden by E. Todd, were soon at the head of affairs, the latter being slightly in front passiiifr tho stand, with Kaihiku lying next. This order was not changed till three furlongs from homo, where Berma Pointer took tho lead. The latter led into the straight, and looked all over a winner, but St. Thomas challenged nt tho distance post, and boat the Alilton-trained horse home by two lengths. Hush a bye was ten lengths away third, followed by Jolly Pat, Kaihiku, and Homer. Times; 3min 17 2-o.seo, 3min 39 3-ssec, 3min 41 3-ssec. Totalisator investments, £2,851.

Guncase was withdrawn from tho Flying Handicap, 6f, for which Set Sail, with a 51b allowance, was sent out favorite, and with a stronger horseman up .should have won, Apple Dighton, Bugle Note, and Corn Rigs being next in demand. Apple Dighton, Sweet Melody, and Set Sail were the smartest nut, and led Bugle Note and Corn Rigs along the back. Set Sail got knocked back after going two furlongs, and Apple Dighton led into tho straight from Set Sail. At the distance post Set Sail had Apple Dighton’s measure, but was challenged by Corn Rigs (Markhope—Helianthes), ridden by F. Voight, and, being tho more vigorously ridden of tho two, he won by a short half-length. Apple Dighton was four lengths off third, with Hallmark and Sweet Melody next. Time, Imin 15scc. Tolalisator investments, £3.1275. A useful field of steeplechasers mid hurdlers and hacks went ■ out for tho Eastern Light-weight Handicap, IJm, and Sporting Girl was sent out better hacked ■ than Blazes (Calibre —Matchbox), ridden by C. Sinclair, with Soldier’s Pride and Penury Rose also solidly backed. Hubert and Fairy Ring led Blazes for six furlongs, Then the latter went up and took charge, Fairy Ring dropping right out. At the far turn Sporting Girl ran into second place, and followed Blazes into tho straight. The Oamaru Hurdles winner always had the pnii on the favorite, and won by a short length. Penury Rose, who had been kept a long way out of tho race, easily beat a tired lot for third place, finishing eight lengths behind Sporting Girl. Soldier’s Pride and Hubert were next. Time, 2min 12scc. Totalisator investments, £2,7825. A field of eight in the Mnrihikn Handicap, 7f, produced the beat betting race in the history of the club, and the race itself was one of the best ever scon on the course. Valdamo finished np a slightly better favorite than Comic Song, with Happy Days, Tommy Dodd (Solferino —Kilhcrry), ridden by L. J. Ellis, ami Francaise all solidly hacked. Francai.so started from behind the field, and Tommy Dodd, Valdamo, Comic Song, and Hurdy Gurdy ran in lino for a furlong. Then Tommy Dodd dropped hack, and Comic Song and Hurdy Gurdy carried on the running from AAkirhaven, who was at tho head of a hunch, to ihe far turn. Then Hurdy Gurdy took charge, and led Comic Song and Warhnven into the straight, where Tommy Dodd began to improve In’s position. Comic Song had Hurdy Gurdy beaten at the distance post, where Warhnven challenged him. Then Tommy Dodd put in a great challenge and just bent Comic Song by a neck, with Warhnven half a length away third just in front of Hurdy Gurdy and ALildamo. Time, Imin 23 4-ssec. Totalisator investments, £4,1835. MOONEE VALLEY RACES. MANFRED WINS COX PLATE. THREE HORSES KILLED. MELBOURNE, October 25. The Moonee ALilley races were held in fine weather. Principal results:— W.
