MEETING .OF COMMITTEE The Waipiata Sanatorium Committee met at Waipiata, there being present Mr J. Matheson (chairman), Rev, T. W. Potts, Mr F. W. Watt, Hon. 11. Scott, Mr J. Ritchie, Mr J. Horrell, Rev. Canon Small, Mr J. Rodman, Dr i Mecredy (representing the Department i. of Health), and Dr Kidd (medical of the institution). _ The Hon. R. Scott wrote advising that the Minister of Marino .bad promised to supply further weather recording apparatus for the sanatorium. —Received with thanks. The same wrtier also reported on the milk supply at the sanatorium and the necessity of purchasing more cows. Begg and Co., Ltd., advised having forwarded under instructions from the committee three pianos to the Institution, two for the use of tJio patients and one for the staff.— "he Maniototo Hospital Board wrote in connection with the same matter, advising that application had been made to the department for subsidy on the donations received , for the purchase or the instruments. —Received. , The Ashburton, Waitaki, and Maniototo Boards each wrote formally apply* ing for the admission of patients to the sanatorium. —Received; the matter left in the hands of the medical superintendent and secretary to arrange. Dr A. Kidd reported that on September 1 there wore fifty-five patients in the institution. All of them, with the exception of six, whose condition was stationary, were either improving or doing well. Ho reported in detail regarding his visits to Tiinaru and Invercargill during the, month. At the former place he examined twelve patients, six of whom ho recommended for admission, while at Invercargill he_ examined five, of whom two were considered suitable. Ho advised that, ponding the building of further accommodation for patients, he was fitting up three touts tor male patients. An extra nurse would bo required, and this matter was left in the hands of the medical superintendent, with power to act. The Secretary reported that the fol-

lowing patients were in the institution from the different boards South Canterbury 17, Southland 17, .Ashburton D, Waitaki 6, South Otago 4, Wallace and Fiord 1, and Vincent 1, and, including the tents now in course cl miction, there was accommodation for two males. Ho also reported that outing September three patients had, boon discharged cured or with the disease arrested, while at present there was a waiting list of twenty-five suitable cases from fhe different districts desiring admission.

Owing to all the beds in the institution being occupied by patients and there being such « large wailing list, the question was raised as to whether it was advisable for Dr Kidd in i.ho meantime to continue his periodical visits to the different centres, and after the latter had explained the value of these visits in educating the people up to the point of seeking early medical advice ns fo their condition, and uho fact that from now onwards lie hoped to be discharging a larger number oi cured patients, it was decided that Dr Kidd should continue iris visits as had previously been arranged.

The Architect (10, 11. Wilson) reported on the tenders received at last meeting for providing extensions to the existing pavilions to accommodate a further t wen tv-four beds, -which the committee had field over owing to the lowest being in excess of the architect’s Bstimate. in view’ of the urgent need lor more accommodation, the commitWe decided to recommend to the Minster the acceptance of the lowest tender, that of Mr W. M‘Lallan, Dunedin; the committee to undertake certain excavation work on the site, which was included in Mr M'Lellan's price. The Medical Superintendent reported adversely on the proposal to treat patients in _ tents during the summer months, giving various reasons which in his opinion made them unsuitable. In view of this report, the chairman and secretary were directed to obtain for next meeting plans and an estimate of the cost of suitable wooden shelters to accommodate a further nine patients. Authority was also given for the fitting up of electric light in the present wooden shelters when the main brick buildings were connected np to the lighting system. Mr H. J. Quarterman, foreman, reported that the power-house was now completed, and that the whole of the machinery would be fitted up in the course of a week or so. A large quantity of pipes for the pipe line had arrived and was already on the ground. .Tt was hoped to have the oil-engine plant_ working almost at once, thus " enabling the whole of the buildings to bo lighted by electricity. Two tenders were received for cartage of fuel and goods from Wnipiata railway station to the sanatorium. After consideration it was decided not to accept either of them in the meantime, Mr Pitchio being authorsed to purchase a one-ton motor truck to enable the institution to do its own cartium Tho Treasurer (Mr T. Pryde) reported that at date there was a credit Manco at the flank of Now Zealand of £3.800 6s lid, while the committee’s receipts and payments for the six months, compared with tho amounts estimated, were ns follow-Estimated maintenance receipts, £4,000; actual for the period, £3,005; estimated maintenance expenditure, £-‘1,790; actual £3,802; estimated capital receipts,’ £5,200, actual, £7,700 (including Government grant); estimated capital expenditure, £8,004; actual, £10,701.Die report was adopted.
