THE BIG EXHIBITION

AN OFFICIAL COKTRADICTISH There appear to have been rumors in some quarters recently that because oi tho shipping strike in Australia Urn opening day of tho Exhibition wus likely to lie postponed. An official contradiction has been issued by Mr (J. F. Hainswerili, tho general manager, who says:— “There is absolutely no foundation for the rumor referred to. Preparations for the v.’holo undertaking are progressing rapidly, and the original date of opening—November 17- will bo adhered to.

“ As far as the work of the Exhibition authorities is concerned, it is very well in hand. Tho buildings have been completed, tho electric services have been installed, and contracts have been signed, and tho work is in hand for the gas and water services. Tho grounds and paths are in an advanced state, haring been pushed on especially in view of tho spectacular dnneo held by the Women’s Section on September 30, and tho general lighting schemes are practically completed. The amusement devices, including the big scenic railway, are nearing completion, and promise to bo completed and thoroughly tested out long before the opening day. Most of tho goods for the Jlritish Government’s exhibit and for the Canadian Court have been delivered; 'and many are already in position. “if, unfortunately, tho regrettable strike should not bo settled for some time, I see no reason why the directors would have any cause to even consider the posibility of postponing tho opening day. “1 would like to draw the attention of New Zealand exhibitors to the necessity of pushing ahead with the erection of their stands. This is a matter over which we ourselves have no direct control, but wo feel that exhibitors need only to be reminded that but six weeks now remain till the opening clay to ensure their hearty cooperation so that we may have all *u readiness on November 17.

“ Having now been resident in the dominion for over nine months, and during that period having got into touch with tho various trade organisations and the commercial life of the community generally, 1 am more than ever convinced that this Exhibition will be pronounced a success from all noints of view. The enthusiasm which lias already been amused in every quarter has surpassed my expectations. Tin's is my considered opinion, and t fee! that I should be in a position to judge, having been officially connected with exhibitions for the past twentyfive years.”
