There was consternation among racegoers at Randwick yesterday when it was discovered that hundreds of people wore in possession of non-oflieial racq books. The discovery was made just before the first race started. The faked books had a similar appearance to the official books, except that they wore pink instead of blue. An examination showed tliat they contained numerous errors, including‘the wrong numbering. This led nnwarv purchasers of tho unofficial hook, who failed to notice tho official warning posted when tho discovery was made, to back the wrong numbers. Some wore heavy losers as the result. Detectives quickly got 'to work and arrested a man on tho course. They later arrested three, other men and two boys, and seized a complete printing plant, which was said to have been used lor the forgeries. They also discovered £IOO in florins, allegedly part of the proceeds of the sale of the faked books. Another sensation was that of thieves taking advantage of the bustle after the last race to snatch a bag from a bookmaker, named Jack Mandel, containing £2,500 in notes. They got clear away.
