TONG MURDER
RECORD NEW YORK RAID NEW YORK, September 18. Federal and city officers last night staged the greatest raid in Chinatown’s history, following the street murder of one member of rival Tongs three hours after they had signed a peace pact. A crowd of 700 Celestials was quickly gathered in, including the actors_ and many in the audiences of two Chinese theatres. The spectacular raid was continued in shops and boarding-houses, the officers seizing razor-edged hatchets, revolvers, and knives by the truck-load. Two officers narrowly escaped when’ hatchets were thrown at them.
