WIRELESS CONTRACTS
.. AMERICA AND JAPAN. VERY CONFLICTING CLAIMS. LONDON, September 18. The extreme reserve with which the question is officially treated is a measure of tho delicacy of the situation, says tho Washington correspondent of ‘ The Times,’ regarding tho conflicting claims that have arisen in connection with wireless contracts between tho Chinese Government and American and Japanese interests. Two solutions arc being discussed. Ono is the Chinese Govern men t_’s proposal to cancel tho existing contracts and substitute a new arrangement, with China co-operating, but the suggestion of a “ new deal ” is unpalatable to Japan, and it would he equally surprising if America approved of it. There remains tho idea of a wireless consortium, which tho British Government now has taken up, in which China would co-operato with the British and French, as well as tho American and Japanese, interests. That, at least, offers a solution of what otherwise might become a source of great international friction.
