EDUCATIONAL MEEHODS

TEACHERS IK CONFERENCE [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, August 20. The principals and assis tains of thu secondary scnools of New Zealand having met yesterday separately, to-day combined in a discussion of the educational problems. Mr J. Murray (Palmerston North) presided. The ideal, said the chairman, was for all trained men and all trained women in ail the schools, and it should be attainable. The training colleges were endeavoring to make provision lor this, but for trainees definitely preparing lor secondary work the present conditions, he considered, were not such as to allow them to obtain the best results. Let them allow a young student ample time to acquire his scholarship so that the broadest and highest results might not be lacking. Sympathy as well as efficiency, altruism as well as forceful personality, should he cultivated. Ho did' not know what definite results had followed the departmental conference on teacher training, to which the association was not invited. With regard to the separation of academic and professional training, this was not so easy to put into practice as might appear. There was a difficulty in keeping track of the repeated changes in the University Senate’s legislation regarding dogrees. ilo favored the bachelor s dogreo of a decade ago, which was proceeded to in two sections of four plus two or three different subjects, and which could he attained in three years. A better training was necessary for a profession making a high demand on enthusiasm, faith, and service-^ Mr Frank Tate (Director of Education in Victoria) addressed the conference on the Victorian system. The relationship of junior to senior high schools was discussed.
