SPORTING

C.J.G. MEETING SOUTHERN HORSES SUCCESSFUL NOTES OX THE RACING. [Special to the ‘Stab.’] CHRISTCHURCH, August 13. The second day of the Grand National Carnival at Riccarton bi - .;..c badly, the sky being overcast, and uciting showers falling until just before 'the big hurdle race. The attendance was below the usual, and the going worse than any year since Medallion’s win in 1004. Otago and Southlanders did well in the last three races on the programme, for after Penury Rose won the Grand National _ Hurdle Race, Bachelor Gay and Kilfane scored for Otago, and sent loyal supporters of the southern horses homo in good form. A largo .number of the American fleet wore present, and to a man they supported the Bluff horse in the big hurdle race. The Beaufort Steeplechase produced .another line nice, with six horses having chances three furlongs from home. Four fought out a great finish. Puwhero, a groat jumper, made the early pace too hot for Frenchman to stay with him long, and at the end of a m ; le, when the stand double was crossed, Puwhero was 40yds clear of a hunched field. He continued to show tiie way at a good pace until two fences from home, where he foil, when still 'a cloven lengths in front. Then Eerie, Passiii’ 'Through, Blue Hall, and First In no raced at the last fence almost in lino, and the former, landing first, was able to stall off two challenges and beat Passin’ Through, who was ridden by A. E. Ellis, by a couple of lengths. Fienchman unseated his rider at the fifth fence, and Tigerland Hit. the sod wall about half a miio from home, but Scobie made a great recovery. Ho was going well when ho met this trouble. • With a field of sixteen, the Grand National Hurdle Race had a very open appearance, and the public wont very soLdly for Nnkuraai. No horse in the birdcage stripped better than Lnculloct and Penury Rose, who was all the bettor for his race on Tuesday. Considering liis good showing at Wellington last month, Southlanders would not hear of his defeat, and A. E. Ellis riding one of his best races, the Bluffowned horse won very meritoriously. Ellis showed good judgment in steering a wide course to the post over the last furlong, and his judgment certainly helped Penury Rose to win. Captain Sarto ran a groat race to the last hurdle, but just failed to see out the last bit. Maunga, who finished third, was over half a furlong behind at the end of a mile, and his run over the last six furlongs was one of the best ever seen at Riccarton.

Kilfane was backed down to a false price in the last race, and had a very narrow margin over Deucalion at the finish.

Warhaven ran unsupported by his party in the August Handicap, and very narrowly missed bringing off a surprise victory. The rain had lifted when the four horses on the card for the Hunt Club Cup (2jra) went out, Birkenella (Birkenhead—Camilla, ridden by Henderson) being selected as favorite. Ho and Uncle Bob led at a very slow pace to Cutts’s, whore the latter fell, leaving Birkenella to lead Ethiopian the rest of the way and win by ten lengths. Nightraid. who fell at the top of the straight the first time round, was remounted, and finished over a furlong away third. Time, omin 43scc. Totalisator investments, £2,245. Blue Peter was the only withdrawal from the Woolston Handicap (Gf), and Miss Minerva, with Emerson up, was sent out a good favorite, with Serotina and Highflown (Hyraettus—Frebird, ridden by A. Tinker) next in demand. Flaming Ray and Highflown were the first to show out. Then the latter gave way to All Colors. Miss Minerva - , on the rails, was in lino with Serotina, Flaming Ray, and All Colors, with Highflown just behind, when the course proper -was reached. Then the favorite drew out, and looked-to be winning comfortably inside the distance post, when Highflown put in a groat challenge, just getting up to beat the favorite by a head, with Uleaborg throe lengths away third, followed by Knocklyn find Solway. Time, Imin 19 2-ssec. Tofalisator investments, £4,752f.

Only tlie National winner, Tula, was withdrawn from tho Beaufort Steeplechase (24m), and Eerie . (Nassau— Mountain Dream, ridden by S. Walls) was made a good favorite, 'with Tigerland, Passin’ Through, and Puwliero next in demand. Frenchman and Puwliero led over the first fence, with Tigerland and Passin’ Through at the head of tho others. The leaders soon opened out a long gap, being twelve lengths in front at the top' of the straight, where Frenchman lost Ins rider. Passing the stand, Puwhero was ten lengths in front of Tigerland and Passin’ Through, ivith Eerie and Kipling next, and Aurora Inst. At Gutts’s tho gap had been reduced to half a dozen lengths. Racing to the sod wall, Eerie and First Line closed upon Tigerland and Passin’ Through, these four being in close order at the post and rail, where Puwhero was about four lengths in front. There was little change at the kennels’ double, but at the sod wall, where Tigerland made a faulty jump, Eerie took second place, with Pasiiv Through third. Puwhero fell at tho second last fence, leaving Eerie and Passin’ Through in front, with Blue Hall closing up fast, and First Line next. There was not much between the three leaders at tho last fence, hut Eerie drew away on the flat to win by two lengths. First Line finished fast, hut Passin’ Through beat him bv a head for second place, with Blue IT all only half a length further hack. Time, smin 29 2-ssec. Totalisator investments, £5,190» In the Sumner Handicap (1m) Bonghleen Dhoun and Chickwheat wore withdrawn, and Goldtown, who had run a good second to Sim Up at the Hunt Meeting, was made a good favorite, with Tilt and Musical tho only other starters well hacked. The favorite at once went to tho front, and was followed by Rapier and Horatius. Goldtown was eight lengths clear half a milo from home, hut the gap was much less when he Ted Rapier and Horatius into tho straight. Inside the distance post Rapier challenged tho favorite, and in a good finish went on to win by a length from Horatius, who got up in the last few strides to beat the favorite for second money. Time, Imin. 19 4-ssec. Totalisator investments, £5,389. Passin’ Through was the only withdrawal from the Grand National Hurdles (about 24m, but actually 2m 4f KiOyds), and Nukumai was at once installed a good first favorite, with Penury Rose (A. E. Ellis) second favorite, and Highway and Lucnllcnt nearly as well hacked. Boniform was first to show out, followed by Tinokaha, En Route, and Te Kawa; hut at the first hurdle To Kawa jumped to the front, and opened out a gap of six lengths from Tinokaha. Bonibrook, and Highway, who headed the next hunch, Santiago and Maunga being last, with Vagabond, Booraerday, and Trespass only a few lengths in front of thorn. There was no change till they reached the straight, where Te Kawa had a big lead, while En Route and Nukumai wore running at the head of the next bunch. En Route fell at tho hurdle near tho carriage paddock, and To Kawa led past the stand by ten lengths from Nukumai, Tinokaha, Penury Rose, Highway, and ’Frisco Mail, with Vagabond commencing to' move up. At G'utts’s Nukumai had reduced the lead of To Kawa to half a dozen 'knsztM* while Paouig Eos© and Sarto

were next. Vagabond fell at the inil° post. Running round the back turn Te Kawa was about three lengths m front of Nukumai, with Penury Rose, Captain Sarto, and ’Frisco Mail closing up, while Lncullent was six lengths back at the head of a strnng-out held. Half a mile from homo there was not much to choose between Te _Kawa, Nukumai, Penury Rose, and Captain Sarto, with Lncullent and ’Frisco Man next. Nukumai led over the last hurdle, but Penury Rose gradually wore him down, and won by a little over a length. Maunga. who came with a great run over the ■ last hallmile, finished third, four lengths an ay and half a lentgh in front of Captain Sarto, with Te Ivawa next. Timej omiu ISseo. Totalisator investments. £/,9<h All started in the Handicap (Of), for which Kuhio was slightly better backed than Rohntai, with Solferite (Solferino —Raima), ridden by Fmorson, next in demand. Dancing Days, Solferite, Beaumont, and Claroina were the early leaders, and this was the order to "well into the straight, where Warhaven got through on the rails. The latter was challenged iusiclo ihc distance post by Solferite, and in a good finish the latter boat the Southlander by a length. Beaumont was two lengths away third, followed by Hall Mark and Clontarf. Time, 3nun ]») l-osec. Totalisator investments, £7,091. Bachelor Gay (Gay Lad—Corona ta), ridden by H. E. Ryder, was rated the best of good things for the Spreydou Hurdles (3fm), Many Colors being the only other well backed; but before the favorite won he gave his backers a couple of thrills, which made them very doubtful about his chance. At the start, in front of the stand, ho struck the hurdle, his rider making a wonderful recovery, and at the last fence he again hit hard. Ho led lor nearly a mile. Then Many Colors and Tenterlield went up to him lor about three furlongs, but he drew away again, and won very easily by seven lengths from Many Colors, with Tenterfiokl three lengths off third, lied Kxias was a bad last. Time, _3min 32sec. Totalisator investments, £5,122. Solferite was withdrawn from the Islington Handicap (IJ-m), and Kilfane ISunny Lake—Killena), ridden by F. Voight, and Deucalion carried most ol the money between them, with Serene next in demand. The field ran in line fot a couple of furlongs. Then Mountain Lion and Waetea took the lead from Boadicea, who was pulling very hard. At the far turn Boadicea went to the front, and led Mountain Lion, Deucalion, and Killoera into the straight, with Kilfane still on the rails. At the distance post Deucalion challenged Boadicea, and Kilfane came put from the rails, and in a great race to the judge the Otago horse just heat Deucalion by a head, with Boadicea two lengths and a-half away third, followed by Mountain Lion and Killoera. Time, 2min 18 4-sscc. Totalisator investments, £8,396.
