SPIRITUALIST CHURCH

Miss R. Burgess’ spoke on the subject of ‘The Feast of Belshazzar ’ at tho service in Smith’s Hall on Sunday evening. Taking her text from the fifth chapter of Daniel, she explained how that king_ thought he had taken every precaution tb protect his kingdom from the enemy, and had given himself and ilia court up to orgies of dissipation. Sho dealt with the Biblical record of tho “ writing on tho wall,” and pointed out bow history repeated itself with other mighty nations, giving the instances'of Romo, Egypt, and Greece. Sho pointed out how even to-day those who had eyes to see might discern the writing on the wall; and sho warned those who forgot God, those who worshipped at the shrine of idols of brass, stone, or of gold, those who lived a life which meant ruin to (heir bodies—their temples given to them by their Creator—that if they did not hoed the writing on the wall they, like Belshazzar, would find them kingdoms taken away from them. Many seemed to think that they came io earth by chance, that they had no duties to perform, that all they needed to care about was a life of pleasure, to wallow in excess of all kinds. When the warning came they often needed an interpreter to explain. They stood still when they heard tho accusing voice, and in many cases it was only at tho close of their earthly career when the spirit was liberated from the body that they learned how seriously they had neglected their duly to God, ami they found that they had to remain for long in the lower spheres to work out the arrears piled up through neglect of their opportunities while on earth. The path of eternal life was open to all who would choose to follow it. Although one might think that the world was going headlong to destruction, we could rest assured that whatever happened it was all according ,to God’s law. Every here and there would bo found some who would understand, who would listen to tho accusing voice, and would turn aside as they saw the writing on tlie wall. Truly, God had given to each the capacity to learn and to understand, if wo would but try. She concluded tho address with a plea that each one might try to build up an edifice of spiritual power. The after circle is attracting those who want the higher truths of Spiritualism unfolded to them in a practical way.
