Search lias been begun by the Azerbaijan 'Arcineological Society for tire treasure of Alexander the Great, which is believed to be buried near tire village of Andrirka, in the Shemakha district, about sixty-five miles from Baku, ou the Caspian Sea 1 . Although there are no precise historical data indicating the. existence of such a treasure, the archaeologists were loci to excavate by the statement of a resident in Andrivka, named Savelieff, who declares he is in possession of an ancient map taken from a Turkish Sultan many years ago, showing the exact spot where the treasure is buried. It is on established historical fact that. Alexander’s troops mutinied atone point in the great empire-builder’s campaign against Persia in 331 b.c,, and local legend has it that he hid nil his gold nnd royal possession, together with the spoils of war, somewhere on the Caspian littoral, in order to prevent them from falling into the hands of the mutineers. Whether the archaeologists find the treasure or not they believe their excavations may bring to light other relics, which will afford some knowledge of the peoples nnd nations which existed in this ancient region before the dawn, of Gliristiauiljk - ■
