BOWLING

ANNUAL MEETING OF DELEGATES The annual meeting of delegates appointed by the different clubs mot on Saturday evening. Mr T\ J. Campbell (president of the Centre Executive) was in the chair. There was a good representation of delegates. The most important step taken during the evening was the adoption of a radical change in the constitution, whereby each club, great or small, will in future be entitled to a direct representative on the Centre Executive.

After the retiring executive’s report and statement of receipts and expenditure had been received, Mr 1). C. Cameron moved—“ That the rules be altered to give effect to flio following: ‘The Executive Committee to be the number necessary to give each affdiated club one delegate on the Centro Executive. Ten to form a quorum.’ ” Mr Cameron briefly stated reasons why bis motion should bo carried, emphasising the fact that at present many clubs had no show of a direct voice in the management of local bowling affairs. Mr A. Walker seconded.

The discussion which followed was altogether of a nature favoring the motion, several delegates announcing that they had received direct instructions from their chibs to support it. The motion was carried with but two dissentients, and the following were elected the executive for the coming season:—E. J. Campbell (Anderson Bay), W. Wright (Ualmacewcn), W. T. Henaghan (Caledonian), R. H. Todd (Caversham), A. J. Sullivan {Dunedin), J. L. Miller (Green Island), Jas. Christie (Fairfield), J. M’Uregor (KaikornD, C. A. Wilson (Leith), P. Vance (Mornington), J.Tonkin (Northeast Valley), E. Falconer (Otago), D. Banncrman (Ontrani), W. Love (Port Chalmers), J. Harraway (Boslyu), W. Jacobsen (St. Kiida), G. Swift (Scacliff), W. Allan (Taiori), W. Connor (West Harbor), A. MTxonzie (Kaituna), D. M. Fnsticr (St. Clair). Waikouaiti’s nomination is to bo approved. Mr Alex. M’Kenzio was elected president of the executive, Mr W. T. tlcnaghan vice-president, Mr D. M. Fustier treasurer, and Messrs C. .Russell Smith and J. A. MTvinnon auditors.

When the question of fixing the levy per each member of dubs for executive expenses was brought forward it was proposed that it bo the same as last year (Is), but Mr J. Abbott pointed out that something more was necessary. Expenses would necessarily bo greater Phis coming season. Many more visitors would bo with us on account of the Exhibition; the dominion tournament would take place here; the British team was coming. All this meant an expenditure out of the usual, and he moved that the ’centre levy bo Is 6d per head.—Mr D. C. Cameron seconded.—Mr G, Nelson said he would go further, and raise tiic levy to 2s.— There was opposition from Mr Campbell, Mr Todd, and Mr Millar; but Mr Abbott’s motion was carried by a largo majority. Mr G. Nelson introduced for discussion the appointment of substitutes m tournament games. He said that this mattolr required careful supervision; otherwise there was danger of a “ ringin ” in the final stages of a competition.—The President (Mr Alex. MTvenzie) explained that the practice of the executive had been to allow only players or equal calibre to take the places of thoso unable to continue.—lt was promised that the matter would bo carefully watched. In reference to the number of interclub games to ho played during tbo coming season, Mr W. Co mior moved, and Mr J, Harraway seconded, that the executive arrange as many games as possible, but that there he no banner competin' in. —Messrs D. C. Cameron and F. 'Wilkinson opposed tbo motion.—Air - J. if. Walker thought there would bo little honor attaching to the banner this season.—Mr (4. Nelson said that it was possible that Dunedin Chib woiild not enter at all Ibis season.—Air Falconer, while supporting a banner competition, thought, other clubs shot,id relievo Dunedin Club as much as possible by providing more rinks for that club’s teams on their greens. There was sure to bo a groat demand on Dunedin Club’s green by visitors.—lt was finally resolved to go on with the banner competition.

Mr W. Jacobson moved and Mr F. J. Campbell seconded that the four-rink competition bo carried out, play to take place in the evenings.—Carried.

It was decided to hold an Easter tournament only. Sir D. Y. Millar moved and Mr Wright seconded .that the tournament consist of rinks, pairs, and singles competitions.—Agreed to. It was resolved to hold also the champion of champions and the shield rink competitions. Mr D. C. Camcion moved and Mr A. Walker seconded—“ That in selecting representative loams the centre selectors consult in writing the selector or selectors of each club to secure the names of all members available for oacli fixture and To select the teams from these players.’’—Mr E. Falconer suggested tint a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs E. .Harraway, J. Tonkin, D. M. Fustier, W. Wright, C. It. Smith, C. J. Payne, and H. Smeaton, bo appointed to go thoroughly into the subject and report to the executive. These gentlemen were experienced players and well acquainted with tournament procedure, and their opinion would be valuable. Mr Falconer was of the view that the interprovincial mulches should be four rinks a side instead of eight, and that South Canterbury should bo brought in as a separate district. This would menu that four teams would bo competing—Otago, Southland, North Canterbury, and .South Canterbury. Matches could bo played ; n Dunedin, Invercargill, Christchurch, and Timaru in rotation. Tbo winners of the morning games could play oil’ in the afternoon for final honors, while the losers could also have an enjoyable afternoon’s contest. While several delegates wero inclined to support Mr Falconer’s suggestions, the majority thought tha*- the executive should decide the matter, and the original motion was carried. It was reported that in connection with the election of the South Island representatives on the Dominion of New Zealand Bowling Association no ballot was necessary, as only the requisite number had been nominated. The South Island delegates wore:—Dunedin: Messrs H. F. M. Mercer, (Dunedin), D. M. Fastior {St. Clair), J. J. Marlow (St. Kiida), and W. Connor (West Harbor). .Invercargill; Mr J. Loudon. Timaru; Mr,M. E. Torlcsso. Christchurch: Messrs M. I'. Barnett and J. D. Colville. Votes of thanks to retiring officers concluded the meeting.
