WORLD’S BEST BUTTER

THE AUCKLAND fiDMPETITIOH many mmm entries * (Ihofvrsfc world’s championship buffer competition, which "will ho hold at tho forthcoming Auckland Winter Exhibition, is creating intense and widespread interest in the dairying world (says tho .Herald ’). '['ho entries, which closed last week, total oighty-pevon, of which forty-three arc from Now Zealand factories. The fact that over half the entries come from overseas is striking evidence of the importance attached to tho competition by.the leading butter producers of the world.

Australian factories are particularly well represented with a total of tweuiyniuo entries, drawn from Queensland, Neve South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. There is an entry from Denmark, tho dominion’s chief competitor in the world markets. Tho Central States of America—Minnesota, Wisconsin, and lowa—have forwarded entries, and two have also been received from Fiji.

Strong competition is expected from Ireland, no fewer than nine separate entries having been received from that country. Of those five are from Limerick County, two from Kerry, and two from Kilkenny. Tho butter from Ireland was shipped by the liomnera, which, arrived at Wellington recently. It .was expected that. Esthonia would bo a competitor, inquiry having been received from that country about the competition, but no entry has come to band. The prise money offered for tho competition totals £IOO, tho first prize being £SO, second £-30, and third £2O. In addition, gold medals will be presented to the .successful competitors. Needless to state, tho overseas entrants arc not competing for the value of the money prize. The dominion is regarded not only as tho dairy farm of the Empire, but has also gained an enviable reputation for its product in the world markets. Any country capable of competing with the dominion factories in the competition under review must have reached a high standard of dairy manufacture; tho winning award to any overseas country would be a priceless advertisement of the superfine quality of the successful country’s product. New Zealand’s forty-three entries in tho competition are drawn from nil parts of the dominion, both North and South Islands being strongly represented. Should tho first award in tho first world’s championship butter compehtitiou go to a dominion company, the successful factory manager will have done much to strengthen tho prestige of New Zealand as the producer of the world’s best butter. Recognising tho importance of fho occasion the Winter Exhibition Committee has invited the Commonwealth Government to send a steward from Australia to witness the judging of the entries. Definite information as to whether an appointment will he made by tho Australian Government has not yet been received, but it is anticipated that an expert will come across. The judging wall be in accordance with dominion standards, and will be performed by the officers of the Government dairy division. In tho process of judging tho source of the various exhibits will not bo known to the judges. _____
