LONDON, July 23. , In the House of Commons Mr Baldwin said the Admiralty would do its utmost to 'diminish tlio extra cost of the' now construction by a substantia] reduction in maintenance and other charges. Moreover, a •committee of throe not connected with the Government would be appointed as Soon as possible to examine maintenance costs and interior economy in the Navy, the Army, and the Air Services. 'There was lively questioning by the Laboritcs and others. Mr A. Henderson (Labor) intimated that the Opposition would give attention to the matter on Tuesday. Mr A. A. Purcell (Labor) said lie wondered when Britain would get a Government with courage to put the Admiralty in its proper place, Mr J. M. Keuworthy (Liberal) asked whether the programme had been drawn up without reference to the ships being built abroad.
Mr Baldwin, replying, emphasised that this was entirely a replacement programme. He promised to give detailed explanations during the debate. —Reuter.
PROTECTING TRADE RDUTES. LONDON, July 24. ' The Times ‘ congratulates the Prime Minister and the Cabinet on the settlement of the cruiser question.
