Faced by the opposition of his parents, Cyril Loxley, aged 18, a farmer, woo alleged to have contracted a runaway marriage with Joan Gwendoline M'Kay, aged 19, at Si. Pancras Register Office, Louden. Among those present at the secret ceremony was Miss linmia Taylor, aged 40, a school mistress, and Miss M'Kay’e aunt.

When 'Lesley's parents heard of the marriage Mr Loxley, sen., instituted proceedings against his son, his daughter-in-law, and Miss Taylor. The Newbury' Bunch commuted Mr and Mrs Loxley, jun., -and Miss Taylor to the Assizes on a charge of conspiring to procure the marriage of two minors by false pretences. At the Assizes Mr Justice Horridge, in his charge to the grand jury, said that there was no doubt that the girl went to London and made a false declaration. Before returning a tame bill,, however, the jury must be satisfied that there was some evidence that the conspiracy was hatched in Berkshire ; otherwise the case could only I bo dealt with in London.
