AUSTRALIAN COAT OF ARMS. The design of tho ■ Australian coat of arms to be used in future on Government publications and official papers was referred to as an “ inartistic heraldic monstrosity ” in tha House of Representa'tives lately by Sir Elliot Johnson, a Now South Wales member. Sir Elliot asked tho Prime Minister, Mr S. M. Bruce, whether it was true, as had been reported, that this was to replace tha British coat of arms on Government publications, and if so, would Mr Bruce have a more artistic Australian coat of arms designed. B'lr Bruce said it was true that the Commonwealth coat of arms was to be used in future. He promised that he would inquire into the matter and see if Sir Elliot Johnson’s condemnation of the design was justified. The features of the Commonwealth coat of arms are a kangaroo a,id an emu supporting an escutcheon, on which are the arms of the six original States of the pointed star. Sprigs of wattle blossom Commonwealth, surmounted by a sevenfrom the background, and underneath is the single word “ Australia.” (
