A cablegram from London states that Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood has left London to take up his duties a 3 Commander-in-Chief in India. _ At tiie meeting of the Hospital Board last night Dr G. M._ Clark was temporarily appointed as assisfantmedical officer of (he Dunedin Hospital for three months, in place of Dr Iverach. The chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr W. E. S. Knight) last night reported that he had instructed the secretary to forward a letter of sympathy to Mr 33. J. Mee upon the death of his wife, the late matron of the Otago Benevolent Institution. Mr Knight said the late Mrs Alee was _ matron of the institution for thirty-eight years, and had done remarkably fine work. Her work was more strenuous than it was now. as she did not have the assistance which was provided later, five other members of the board also paid warm tributes to the work of Mrs Mee. The chairman’s action was approved, members showing their regret ana sympathy by standing in silence. ' P.G. Bin.’ W. H. Devin, senior auditor of Loyal Caversham Lodge, Manchester Unity, and one of the founders of the lodge at Kaitangata, was presented with a suit case by his brethren at Caversham at ilia meeting on Wednesday night. Bro. Bavin has retired from the position of engineer at the Burnside Freezing; Works, and will shortly take up his residence in Auckland. " R.P.G.M. Bro. J. Wilson mado the presentation, and referred to Bro. Bovin's zealous services to the lodge during the past twenty-five years and to his splendid work m the interests of the Manchester Unity.
