INTERNATIONAL TUG-OF-WAR CONTEST COMIC OPERA AND MUSICAL COMEDY. Tho variety of interest which will bo provided for at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition is evident from the programme of competitive events and eniertaimnonis which is being arranged by Che director of amusements (Mr Scott Colville).

One of the principal sporting events will bo the tug-01-war competition, which will take place from January L'j to 20 inclusive, a sum of no less than £I,OOO being allocated among tho winners. It is interesting to learn that two teams of tho local police force have decided to enter, and will commence training immediately. The prize money for the musical rnd elocutionary competitions festival will also set a record for the dominion. In connection with tho Exhibition Operatic Society, it is proposed to one musical comedy and one comic opera. A meeting of tho committee was held this afternoon to make a selection of tho pieces to be presented, to appoint a producer, and to fix dates for the voice tests, which will probab'y be fairly severe owing to tho large number of applications from performers that have been received. The 11111.-.)-cal comedy will be selected from the following Tho Gay Parisicmte.’ ‘ Eloradora,’ 4 Hello of New York,’ and ‘ Miss Hook of Holland,’ and the comic opera from 1 Thomas Jones,’ ‘ Veronique,’ and 1 T.e Cloche do Cornevilic.’

To assist the Exhibition Operatic Society, the Leech Lyric Choir, through ZM.r John Leech, has kindly offered to giro a repeat performance of ‘ Marita na.’ The r.lioice of a date for the performance is now under consideration.
