FIFTY-TWO ACRES AT FORBURY TO BE CUT UP Mr C. A. Shiel, of C. and W. Shiel, Ltd., told a ‘Star’ reporter something more last night. about the big land utilisation enterprise which his company has entered upon. It will be the most important opening up of building sites at the south end of Dunedin that has been undertaken for many years. In Mentally Mr Shiel stated that the Rugby League Union has acquired from the company sixteen and a-quar--1 ter acres immediately to the south of the Macandrew Road School by paying £IOO down, and thereby .obtaining the right of purchase up to August 31. There is an eight-roomed brick house on this site, at present occupied by three parties of Chinamen. The whole brickworks site on Forhury road amounts to ten aci'es, or, rather, that will be the area available when the kiln and its appurtenances are removed, as they are to be ;at once, to Abbotsford. All this ten ' acres will he subdivided for auction in ! building lots. Two streets tla-ough this block already exist on paper, and those are to be formed. The new site for the brickworks at ■ Abbotsford consists of 100 acres. On it the company will have its own coal, its own clay, and its own sand, so that the company is already supplied with an abundance of building material as well as clay for the brickmaking. The old kiln is to he pulled down, and the' machinery, which is comparatively new a/id quite up to date, is to be shifted from Forbury. As to the seven acres now worked by Chinese as a market garden on Forbury road, the City Council has approved of the reading plan, and it now awaits the authorising Orders in Council. The road will bo a continuation of the blind street that at present runs only to the market garden. It will be parallel to Forbury road and go through to Macandrew road. A modern brick house of five rooms stands on one of those sections. ■

The clay quarry site on the high side of Forbury road, including the orchard and the section whereon the old cottage stands, measures about ten acres. This block is to bo roaded' so as to connect with the top end of Coney Hill road, and there will be another road connecting the block with the sections belonging to the corporation that are abreast of the western terminus of Macandrew road.

On top of the hill, above the quarry, is another block of twenty-five acres, which is to be connected by a road with Easther crescent, so that there will ho a new road con binning from Easther crescent to Allandale.

Very little smoothing and filling will be required on the clay quarry and the other block on the high side, and the material required is all lying handy. These reading projects now await the approval of the Public Works Department, the same ns the market gardens site. As soon as these preliminaries are settled arrangements will be speedily made for auctioning the whole of the sections for building purposes, and Mr Shiel reiterates his statement that if they do not sell the comapny will itself inaugurate a building scheme. The company is compelled to shift its brickworks, as the old clay quarry is worked out and the land o'n this and the other sites is too valuable to bo allowed to lie idle.
