EXPLOSION IN COLLIERY

An explosion occurred at the Rothbnry colliery, near Cessnock, early in the morning. 'There wore only two men in the mine at the time—Booth Symington, a pumper, and William Crisp, a deputy. Symington was rescued unconscious, hut an exhaustive search failed fo reveal any* trace of Crisp. The explosion was so severe that it blew out one of the stoppings, demolishing 60ft of brick wall. A gang searched all morning for the entombed man, but the air was so had that they were compelled to leave the mine, which will he scaled. There is little hope of now finding Crisp alive. So far there are no signs of fire. The explosion occurred 800yds from the mouth of the tunnel.
